"Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" ee a TRE PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 1, 2000 - § Work on new North Durham station has begun By Rik Davie Special to the Star Construction crews began to clear the site of North Durham's newest police station last week. Crews from Canning Construction Limited started work on the site, on Hwy.12 just south of Regional Rd. 8 (Reach St.). Durham Regional Police Const. Al Robins was on hand to oversee the project's launch, and will be the on-site coordi- nator for operational areas of the new station that will serve Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock. "My main function here will be to see that actual building in the opera- tional areas of the station conform to the plans," said Const. Robins. "1 will do that by liai- son with the builders on site, the regional site coordinator and police services." Const. Robins will also guide police brass visit- ing the site as construc- tion proceeds through an estimated eight month timetable. The man Const. Robins will work most closely with is site superinten- dent Bruce Boddy. He was on hand last week to watch as crews cleared brush from the site to prepare for the location of power lines and the construction trailer that will be his command post. Mr. Boddy said that great care is taken to try not to to disturb the sur- rounding landscape, and incorporate it into the new building. "We have to pretty much clear the front of the property for the park- ing areas and building site itself," he said. "To the rear and sides of the site we will incor- porate much of the natur- al landscape already here and save as much of the treed areas as we can." The new station has drawn some fire from Uxbridge and Brock politicians for its souther- ly location. It will give much need- ed space to the growing police needs of north Durham. Musicians' Corn Roast By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Another great line-up of musi- cal talent will take to the stage in Blackstock when Paul and Charlene Wasson host their annual Musician's Corn Roast on Aug. 13. Held 'each year in memory of the late Larry Dee, the annual bash attracts musical guests from across the province and beyond. After |1 years of donating the proceeds from the event to the Heart and Stroke Foundation for research purposes, the Wassons decided last year to offer the money to the Port Perry and Blackstock Lions Clubs instead. They said government and foun- dation regulations had created so much bureaucratic red tape that had become a huge hassle to hold the fundraiser, and donate the proceeds. Money forwarded to the two Lions Clubs will be put back into the community through their var- ious projects and efforts. Those already scheduled to make an appearance at this year's "2000 Millennium Show" include Doreen Brown, The House Band, Dave Barber of Lindsay, "Canada's Funniest Man" Lorne Hachey, Oshawa gospel singer Linda Evans, Pontypool's Laura Lavery, Johnny Burke and Harold Mcintyre, Omemee"s Joe and Darlene White, Ambassador Records recording artist Sherry Black, Mike and Mickey McGivern, a Country Music Hall of Fame inductee, and an open jam ses- sion hosted by Chef Adams. Also performing will be Lindsay singing sensation Donny Henderson, Port Perry's Klick n' Tyme Cloggers, and Canadian Music Award winner Anita Perras. The event is a way for the Wassons to pay tribute to Larry Dee, a family friend and fellow musician who died of a heart attack 13 years ago. Over the years, the bash has turned into a wildly popular event, with a steady group of supporters, and new visitors each summer. The only hitch this year, says Mr. Wasson, is that poor growing conditions may mean there's not much corn available. They can't afford to buy dozens and dozens of ears of corn at market prices, which are expected to be higher than in recent years. The Wassons are hoping to purchase the corn at a wholesale price, or they may be forced to have a cornless corn roast this year. The rest of the day's activities, fun, games, admission, food (including hotdogs and hamburg- ers), and security will be taken care of by the Lions Clubs. There will also be a horseshoe tournament, raffles, spot-dances, clowns, face-painting, and a 50/50 draw. The Aug. 13 show starts at noon and will run through to 8 p.m. Admission is $5, and visitors are urged to bring their own cool- ers and lawnchairs. Children are welcome. The Wasson's home is located at 4790 McKee Rd., southeast of Blackstock. OF Cie. < £ fay x i185 local Lions Clubs. FEN Paul Wasson provides a preview of the line-up for this year's Musicians.
