His succinct answer was "No" And the Atlanta-based team proved Daly correct as the Audi squad survived to claim the victory in an incident filled, minute contest. Setting a new track record in qualifying of 1:08.4 minutes (129.361 miles per hour) the #78 Audi R8 sportscar of Le Mans win- ners Frank Biela and Emanuele Pirro claimed the pole position with the defend- ing race champion Jan Magnussen in the #1 Panoz LMP-1 completing the front row. Local favourite Ron Fellows scared himself but he managed to put his #3 Good- Wrench Corvette C5-R on the GTS pole (11th overall) ahead of the all-powerful Oreca Viper team. The headlining event was flagged away under threatening skies with the #78 Audi taking the early lead. Almost immediately, the rain began to fall, a light mist at first, then a steady light shower. There were innumerable position changes, in part to rain soaked affair in Sunday's 2 hour, 45 B 2] Mosport jewel shines through sy wet, disasterous weekend four, full course caution periods, the most drastic of which was the retirement of the Magnussen/Brabham Panoz, a result of a hard hit to the turn three tire wall. The rain finally abated, but on a drying track, the accidents continued. Included in the list of casualties was the #78 Audi which made a spectacular exit into the turn eight gravel trap with only 20 minutes remaining in the event. When the checkered flag finally flew, it was the #77 Audi of Alan MacNish and Rinaldo Capello taking the overall ALMS win, edging out the #42 BMW V-12 LMP of J.J. Lehto and Jorg Muller. The #43 BMW of Bill Auberlin and J.P. Gounon finished in third place, one lap down. The fourth place overall finisher, and first in the GTS class was the Olivier Baretta/Karl Wendlinger Dodge Viper #91. Less than a second behind (5th place overall, second in class) was the Corvette team of Ron Fellows and Andy Pilgrim. Other race winners from Mosport's ALMS weekend included Jean-Sebastian Bedard taking the Canadian Formula Ford race, lan Lacey earning the checkers in the U.S. Formula event and the Porsche team of Richard Spenard and ].P. Dumoulin claiming top spot in the three hour Motorola Cup enduro. Lishmans' Brett Cotton made some " Redmen roll over A's, take command of semi-final series By Mark Stehlin Brooklin Redmen Lacrosse The Brooklin Redmen continued their roll through the semi-final series against the Major Whietics this evening in Whitby. The team was coming off a 17-3 win on Friday night in St. Catharines and were looking to take a 3-0 stranglehold in the series. The Redmen did not disappoint their home fans and went on to a con- vincing 21-8 win on. the night and a 3-0 lead in the semi-final series. In the other semi-final series the Brampton Excelsiors lead the Peterborough Lakers by two games to none. The Redmen scored the first goal on this night with Nick Trudeau scoring his great Ist base plays. Overall a fun day in the "sandbox" was had by all! Lishmans vs. All Flags (6-15)(10-12) All Flags played great team baseball in both games of a double-header, win- ning both and ending the season with a 12-0 standing! Outstanding hitting from Dylan Van Tienan and Katie Monk with Garrett Gerow. Jackie Norval and Katie Monk played solid defense. Lishmans' Ally Fracz had some great hits. Kurt hit a oth batter home run and brought in three runs. Melissa Fracz and excellent infield . plays by Jade Williams were not enough Coach Peter Vipond spoke to his to stop Ail Flags! troops during the break and his message Tyrone vs. Metal Supermarkets (25- translated into a goal just thirty seconds 20) in by veteran Glenn Clark. The Athletics retaliated to retake a one-goal lead. At that point the Redmen started a run that would knock the visitors off their game. The home team scored five unanswered, including two shorthanded markers on the same penalty, to take an 8-4 lead. Turn to Page 19 first of four on the night with just under two minutes off the clock. Darryl Gibson scored a few minutes later and then the Athletics scored three straight to take a surprising 3-2 lead into the first intermis- sion. Excellent hitting for Tyrone ending in a very close game! Homeruns scored by Gina Westwell and Taylor Davie in the Istinning, John Smith and Connor Whitley in the 2nd helped to keep the score close. Great effort by all! Metal's Madison Nodleman-Williams had five hits and All-Flags sweep Lishmans to finish 2000 season undefeated played well in the field. Tyler Berkers had five hits, including a home run. Carlie Wright was five for five, including two home runs and played well at pitcher Tyke Campbell Electric vs. Cummings Backhoe (10-5) Tyler Matthew hit a double driving in three RBI's in the 2nd inning. Jacob Monk, D. J. Grove and Eric Evanoff were able to get on base twice. Campbell's defense led by strong pitching from Curtis Gibbons with nine strikeouts in three innings played! Great offense by the entire squad, highlighted by Daniel Shields' two run homer and a great hustle to Ist by Ronny Jarvis off a crazy short hit to beat the tag out. Nice throw in from out field by Arianna Racine to hold the batter to a double Mite Analda Garden Centre vs. Blackstock United Church Saints (22-8) Analda Garden Centre played a great game. Several great plays by Jordan Campbell and Robert Gatchell shut down runs to Ist base. Johnnie Ellis got a grand slam homer and Christopher Petire scored three runs.
