After four days of hectic activ- ity throughout Durham Region and across its eight municipal- ities, the 2000 Ontario Summer Games came to a close Sunday afternoon with the final medal presentations. Held from Aug. shot go during 10-13, the Games saw more than 3,000 athletes from across the province compete in 26 events in 30 venues throughout Durham. Large crowds were on hand at most events, as fami- ly and friends cheered on the athletes, all of whom were under the age of 21. The first-ever Ontario Summer Games were held in Oshawa in 1973, and, since then, the Games have been used as a springboard for ath- letes to National Championships, Commonwealth Games, and even the Olympic Games. iy : a A ! There was plenty of rough stuff at the Port Perry High School fields last week when the local school played host to womens' rugby action. Four teams participated in the event, with the top two teams -- Toronto District 1 and Niagara, pictured above in action on Saturday -- advancing to the final Sunday at Wanderer's Field in Ajax.
