a "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 15, 2000 - § Kinsmen Beach is posted for third week For the third consecutive week, Kinsmen Beach in Port Perry has been deemed unsafe to swim in by region health officials. Tests conducted by the Durham Region Health Department have shown a high bacteria count at the local beach, resulting in the health department posting the swimming hole as unsafe. Kinsmen Beach is one of five beaches in Durham Region to be deemed unsafe by the health depart- ment. According to tests by the Durham Region Health Department, Lakeside Beach on Scugog Island remains safe. Other beaches posted by the health department include Rotary Park and Pickering Beach in Ajax, Elgin Pond in Uxbridge, and Bowmanville East beach in Clarington. Water tests are conduct- ed weekly throughout the summer at Durham Region's 16 public beaches in an effort to warn the public of unsafe swimming condi- tions. Beaches are posted when bacteria levels exceed 100 counts per 100 millil- itres. High bacteria can cause ear, nose, and throat infec- tions, as well as upset stom- achs. OPP launches traffic blitz Durham Region motorists will be the tar- get of an Ontario Provincial Police traffic blitz this week. The OPP's Focus 2000 initiative will run from Aug. 15 to 18, and patrols will include Highways 401; 35/115; 48; 7; 12; and 7A. The traffic campaign will target aggressive dri- vers, impaired drivers, speeding, unsafe lane changes and other infrac- tions, say OPP officials. Officers have been instructed to take a zero- tolerance approach to traffic infractions during the four-day blitz. During that time, approximately 40 officers from other OPP detach- ments will lend a hand assisting local officers with the blitz.
