EIT TEETER Quiet Caleb St. has become motor speedway, says resident By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star A once quiet residential street in Port Perry is fast becoming a dangerous speedway, and a resident of that street wants Township council to do something about it. Janice Arksey, who has lived on Caleb Street for some 25 years, says in a letter to council that the speeding vehicle problem started a few years ago when four-way stop signs were removed at the inter- section of Caleb and Elgin Streets. Mrs. Arksey says that speeders are travelling so fast, all four wheels leave the pavement and the vehicles sail through the air for 50 feet at the Caleb- Elgin intersection. "People seem to think of this street as a Township speedway," she writes. Pedestrians and chil- dren playing or riding their bicycles are seriously at risk because of the exces- sive speeds, she says. Caleb Street runs between Queen Street and Highway 7A in the older residential area of the village. Mrs. Arksey writes tnat when the four-way stop signs were in place at the intersection of Caleb and Elgin, drivers would actu- ally slow down and pro- ceed with caution when approaching. She says that police surveillance by patrol cars is of little use if speeders can spot the car and take time to reduce their speeds. She asks that speed bumps be installed in the road or the four-way stop signs that were once there be replaced. Council turned the let- ter over to the roads department to let Township staff have a look at the problem and come up with some recommen- dations.
