A presentation ceremony for those honoured will be held later this year. A date and location has yet to be announced. Meritorious Service Decorations are separated into military and civilian divisions, with two levels in each category: a cross and a medal. The military divi- sion recognizes individuals for outstanding profes- sionalism and for bringing honour to the Canadian Forces. The civilian division. recognizes contributors from any field, from athlétics to diplomatic relations to humanitarian activities. The Military Cross was cre- ated on June 11, 1984; the military and civilian Cross and Medal were created in 1991. Mr. Lishman is to receive the Meritorious Service Medal. These decorations are an important part of the Canadian Honours System, and, like the Order of Canada, they recognize excellence. However, Meritorious Service Decorations honour either a sin- gle achievement or an activity or a specified period of time, while the Order of Canada focuses on life- time achievement. The award is open to Canadians and non- Canadians alike, as long as the act or achievement results in a demonstrable benefit or honour to Canada. Nominations -and awards may be made posthumously but nominations for activities that occurred prior to 1984, and the year in which the hon- our was first created, are not accepted.
