"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, September 6, 2000 - 3 Studio tour's back for 2001, with some revisions By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Organizers of Scugog Township's studio tour are laying plans for next years event, with changes aimed at improving and enhancing it. The second Lake Scugog Spring Studio Tour will take place at a variety of locations in the township May 5 and 6 next year. It comes on the heels of last spring's event, which was greeted with good reviews from both artists and the public. The inaugural event saw visitors viewing the studios of artists and-artisans in 16 loca- tions. It was the first such event for Scugog, although neighbouring communities have held successful studio tours for years. "We're all very pleased with (the 2000) tour," said organizer Carey Nicholson, a Port Perry fibre artist whose studio was among the stops in the event. "we had very posi- tive feedback." A solid response came from members of the public, who were enthused about the quantity and quality of work being done by artists in Scugog, said Ms Nicholson. "A lot of them were so thrilled; they had no idea there was so much here." For the 2001 edition, organizers have introduced a selection process which will see artists apply for a stop on the tour. A panel of three jurors will select 16 to 20 sites to comprise the tour. Jurors will be local art collector and arts supporter Kent Farndale; Emma Quin, mer- chandise and marketing coordinator of the Ontario Craft Council Guild Shop; and Rachel McHenry, a textile designer. The decision to switch to a juried selec- tion process was made to ensure variety and quality in the tour, said Ms Nicholson. - Organizers concluded that having indepen- dent jurors conduct the process was most equitable, and efficient. "This gives us some credibility to the tour... and it brings objectivity to it, which I think the public will appreciate," said Ms Nicholson. "What we're looking for is diversity and quality. We want a good balance of media, and of quality." Artists whose studios are chosen to be stops on the tour will be encouraged to invite guest artists, and emerging artists. Those emerging artists may be younger, less-established people who have some- thing to show the world, but not necessarily the resources to take part in a studio tour. In this way it is hoped to introduce the public to a large number of artists, without greatly increasing the number of stops on the tour, said Ms Nicholson. Deadline for applications for the tour is Oct. 15. Application forms are available at the Tourist Information Centre, 269 Queen St.; Veni Vidi Studio Gallery, 168 Queen St, and the public library on Water St. You can also call Ms Nicholson at 985-4919.
