Ee ---- rn * 22 - PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, September 6, 2000 -------- _--_e "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Health officials on look-out for virus From page 1 whelmed with well-meaning residents, showing up with numerous dead birds of all types. "We have had many peo- ple calling in with inquiries (about the spread of the virus) and requesting birds be submitted for testing," said Dr. Reynolds. "We have had some unusual requests," she added, explaining that only bird carcasses that are not in too advanced a state of decomposition, and' which are not obviously victims of trauma, should be submit- ted for testing. While the testing will focus on crows, hawks and jays, the program could be expanded if there is some significant mortality rate detected among other species, said Dr. Reynolds. "If there are large die-offs of species, we would include those species," she said. The region subscribes to a provincial plan that was drawn up in response to the first reports of the virus in the US. Dr Reynolds described it as a graded schedule of responses, based upon where and when the virus is detected, and to what degree birds or humans have been infected. Among the regional responses would be an infor- mation campaign, informing residents of the presence of the virus and steps they can take to avoid contact with mosquitoes. For more information on the virus, you can visit the regional website at www.region.durham.on.ca, or call the Environment Help Line at 723-8521.
