Volume 134 Number 42 COPY 75¢ (70¢ + 5¢ GST) Poor soi conditions could sink skate park By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star Skateboarding enthusiasts and their parents should find out Sept. 21 what the final price tag is for a skateboard park on a site on Water St. in downtown Port Perry. That's the date township council has set for a meeting of all parties interested in the new skateboard facility: The contractor, engineer, parents' advisory group mem- bers, and the committee working to build a nature trail along the Scugog waterfront. An engineering report on the condition of sub-soils at the location of the proposed park, at Water and Curts St, indicates a considerable amount of site preparation must be carried out before the concrete pad and other elements of the facility can be constructed. The report, from Golder Associates, says five test bore holes were drilled on the site earlier this summer. The tests found sub- soil conditions to be very poor. The report says the entire site will need to be excavated to a depth of 2.1 metres (about seven feet), then filled with clean granular material and properly compacted. To put a concrete pad on top of the present soils would result in cracking and shifting of the pad that would quickly make the skate- board facility unusable, the report says. "This site has very poor subsurface con- ditions from the point of view of develop- ment and is far from being ideal for such a use. Thus, the site preparation costs will be relatively high, depending on the extent and preferred location for the pro- posed skateboard park," says the Golder report. Scugog parks and recreation committee chair Ken Carruthers was reluctant to com- ment on the report until he sees the final cost estimates at the meeting Sept. 21. But he agreed that he is growing concerned about the potential for soaring costs, based on the contents of the report.
