Interestingly, any move to ban the books altogether may have been thwarted by the media coverage of the current restrictions. Board sources confirm that a motion in relation to the Harry Potter books was about to come from trustee Weist. But she withdrew the motion early Friday moming after news reports began to appear on television and radio across the province. When asked to confirm'if she had been planning a motion that would ban Harry Potter books outright, Ms Weist refused to comment. "That's personal; | don't think that's any of your business," the trustee said. But the outspoken trustee did give her views on the series: "I do not like them... | do not approve of them," Ms Weist said. She said the books promote witchcraft. "(Witchcraft) is a recognized religion. And we can't teach Christianity in our schools, so why should we be able to teach witchcraft?" she said. - "If 1 had attended a girls' Catholic school and then wrote a book about the miracles and exorcisms that went on there... well, hqw long do you think that would be in the classrooms?" said Ms Weist. The trustee contends that there is a groundswell of sup- port for banning the books in Durham schools outright, and «¢alled on them to petition the board on the matter. Ms Weist said it is important for the public to voice its views on the Harry Potter books. "People have to speak with a loud voice," she said. "I mean, this is how we lost the Lord's Prayer." Ms Weist is behind a current board effort to compile a book of spiritual messages to be read at opening exercises, and backed an unsuccessful move two years ago to remove what she called "explicit" sex education material used for special needs children in the board. Ms Weist is best known for the community prayer rallies she takes part in every summer. She told fundamentalist religious leaders at a rally two years ago she ran for school trustee because "God told me it was what | should do: To Sat. & Sun. 9-1pm. Doug Ross, a trustee from Whitby and current chair of the board, was shocked and angered by media reaction to the restrictions. "It has painted us as a bunch of rednecks," Mr. Ross said. "But it brought our attention to the matter too." When asked if a motion to remove the restrictions would come, he said, "lI can't as chair make the motion, but | would certainly think it will come, and I will support it when it does." Scugog Trustee Bobbie Drew, vice-chair of the board, is pre- pared to make that motion. Shewas angered by the idea her board might have banned a book of any type. "This is simply a misunderstanding brought on by a vocal minority," she said. "No formal complaint about the book was ever received or processed. But this has cost the board thousands of dollars in staff time just dealing with media inquiries and other backwash from this. We need to fix it... we will fix it." She said her motion will call for restrictions on the books to be eliminated. "The entry of my motion is based on the fact that no for- mal request was ever received to review the material," said Mrs. Drew, who will bring the matter up at the Sept. 18 board meeting. Bev Freedman, the superintendent behind the memo, said, "the book is available in our libraries and for any use students may wish to make of it. The memo was our attempt to recognize the concems of any group - no matter how small - and to be cognizant of all the views held by our public." The Harry Potter series can be of value to children, said Ms Freedman. "It's a wonderful series that has had incredible benefits to young readers," she said. "I have read them, and | would urge anyone of any age to read them."
