Heather, seen above, took part in the Canadian National Wakeboard and Barefoot Skiing competitions held in Montreal over the Labour Day Weekend and came home with four medals. She won won three silver medals for barefoot skiing, a bronze for trick skiing, and then competed in the Open Women's Class and placed second against some of the best barefoot skiiers across North America. Heather is the daugh- ter of Dave and Cathy Mann of Port Perry. Mr. Mann and his son, Michael, recently won at the Canadian Championships in Winnipeg. 2000 campaign came to a close Sept. 9 Checkered flag falls on another Mosport racing season By J. Wally Nesbitt From Corner Five Somehow, somewhere, 18 race weekends have disappeared as on Saturday night, Sept. 9, the Mosport Speedway season drew to a close. And with the final checkered flag, four drivers were awarded their respec- tive year 2000 championships. Four racers took victories in the ThunderCar heat dashes with Oshawa residents Doug Wills, Larry MacKenzie and Gabe Scimone as well .as points leader Terry Shaw earning trips to victory circle. In the 20 lap fea- ture sprint, Larry MacKenzie had the field covered as he claimed his third feature win of the year. Crossing the line in second place was 'Fast Freddy' Travis with Gabe Scimone rounding out the top three. Terry Shaw in his ShockBusters Ford took the checkers in fourth place and this result was enough to guarantee the West Hill native the Bob's Towing ThunderCar championship. Bancroft's Mike Poulton took his #53 Gro-Bark Monte Carlo to the evening's three race sweep in the Terry Cullwick Auto Challenger class and the 75 points he eamed for his efforts gave him the advantage he needed to edge out Oshawa's Bob Kish for the division championship. Kish, who had led the points hunt for most of the season, finished the fea- ture race in second spot and ended the year in the overall runner-up position. Dwight Brown already has a Mosport Street Stock and a Super Late Model championship to his credit and on Saturday night the Beeton resident added to his total by garnering the R.P. Oil Modified crown for the year 2000. Brown shared Saturday's heat wins with Larry Jackson, Jeff Hanley and Burketon's Darren Kearnan (his first Modified win) and then followed Jackson and defending series cham- pion Darrin Wrigglesworth to the checkers in a thrilling 20 lap feature event. It is the third Modified title for the Brown Brothers Brigade, brother Graham had taken the Mosport Modified titles in 1995 and 1998. West Lee Talons entered Saturday's Advantage Personnel Late Model action sitting in second place, 20 points behind points leader and defending champion Brad Corcoran. Closing the points gap with two dom- inating heat wins, Talons saw his effort fall short as Corcoran respond- ed with a heat victory of his own as well as a hard fought win in the 25 lap feature. Frankfort's Steve Blight, in his best finish of the season, took the check- ered flag in second place followed by a charging Talons. With the result, Corcoran in his #50 Monte Carlo becomes the first Late Model repeat champion since Jeff Hanley accomplished the feat three seasons ago. Redmen sweep Victoria for lacrosse title Mann Cup Champs The Brooklin Redmen finished first in the regular sea- son with a record of 13-5, they swept St. Catharines in four in the semi-finals and came back from two down to beat Brampton in seven to become the Eastern Canadian Champions of the Major Series. Sunday night in Whitby the team wrapped up their season with a 14-9 victory over the Victoria Shamrocks which gave them a 4-0 sweep to capture the coveted Mann Cup Trophy. The Redmen were the underdogs in the minds of many. The Shamrocks finished their season with a record of 20-5 and they lost only one game in their playoffs. They had a team full of many veteran and experienced players, including superstar, Gary Gait. If people thought that the host team was going to lose, someone forgot to tell the Redmen. This team was a mixture of age, experience and youth and speed. The combination all came together and when they beat Brampton it seemed they were on a mis- sion to bring the Mann back to Durham Region for the first time since 1990. The win gives the Redmen a total of seven Mann Cup Championships. Bruce Alexander with two goals was named the Budweiser Player of the Game for Victoria while OLA Rookie of the Year, Gavin Prout, with three goals and one assist, received the award for the Redmen. Nick Trudeau was given the Mike Kelly Award Winner for the Most Valuable Player in the series with 12 goals and six assists. The Shamrocks, down 3-0 in the series, started the game with a goal from Blaine Manning with less than a minute off the clock. Neil Doddridge scored at 6:56 to give the Shamrocks a 2-0 lead.
