"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 12, 2000 - § Region launches series of rabies clinics Veterinarians of Durham Region, in cooperation with Durham Region Health Department, will be holding a number of subsidized rabies vaccinations clinics to help residents meet the requirements of the province's Rabies Immunization Regulation. Regulation 567, under the Health Protection and Promotion Act, requires mandatory rabies vaccina- tions for all cats and dogs throughout southern Ontario. Earlier this year, Durham Regional council asked the Ontario Minister of Health and Long-Term Care to include. Durham Region in, this regulation to help curb the threat of raccoon rabies. "We're very pleased that Durham Region vets are subsidizing the low cost clinics for area residents this year," said district veterinar- vian Dr. John Churchill of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. "With the implementa- tion of mandatory rabies vaccination and the threat of raccoon rabies from east- em Ontario and New York State, it's important that all pet owners have access to these clinics, making it easi- er to ensure that their dogs and cats are immunized against rabies." The clinics fulfill an immediate need of getting all cats and dogs up to date in their rabies shots, he said. The cost of vaccination is $15 for each cat or dog. Clinics will accept cash only and pet owners are asked to have correct change. To be admitted to the clinic, all animals must be over three months old and in good health. Board to host parents' conference The Durham District School Board will host its ninth annual Parents as Partners conference on Saturday, Oct. 21 at Sinclair S.S. and the Education Centre Complex at 400 Taunton Road East, Whitby.
