10 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 19, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Residents, staff celebrate nursing home's 25th Another expansion is on the horizon as facility marks milestone anniversary By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Community Nursing Home marked a special milestone when it cele- brated its 25th anniversary on Saturday afternoon. A large group of resi- dents, past and current staff, and friends and fami- ly were on hand Sept. 16 as the community institu- tion marked the opening of the nursing home, which houses 75 residents. Another 70 seniors live in The Villa, an assisted liv- ing home next door. On hand for a special presentations ceremony, Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt called the 25th anniversary an "amazing" accomplishment for the small nursing home. "The (residents) here reside in a live and vibrant place; here, the staff chal- lenge them and make them think, they're not just looked after," said the mayor. "Scugog council cannot say how pleased we are ' with the operation of the nursing home. We'll do whatever it takes to assist you for another great 25 years of success." Certificates were pre- sented to the Community Nursing Home by Durham MP Alex Shepherd and Durham MPP John O'Toole. When the Community Nursing Home first opened, residents origi- nally lived in what's now known as The Villa, site of the former Port Perry hos- pital. The Villa building was originally built to house munitions plant workers in Ajax. But, the end of World War Il meant the residence was never occupied. It was moved to Port Perry, and the hospital was established in it in 1975. In 1969 the current hos- pital was established on Paxton St., and the Simcoe St. building became the nursing home. The larger building was opened on the site in 1975. Now, a quarter-of-a- century later, the facility is ready to expand again. Brian Bradley, general manager of Community Life Care, the company which owns and operates the local nursing home, outlined the expansion plans for the current build- ing. 4 Construction will begin next April on an expansion which will create 32 new beds for the Community Nursing Home. It is expected to be completed and opened in April 2002. Also honoured during the celebrations were Joan Tuck, who received the home's Heart and Soul Award. She has lived at the Port Perry facility for almost 25 years now, and Community Nursing Home also honoured its 15 staff members who have A ff B Pade gt TE NINT ~ Resident Joan Tuck, foreground, received Community Nursing Home's Heart and Soul Award when a 25th anniversary celebration was held at the Port Perry institution on Saturday.
