McClelland Port Perry Star Members of the Scugog Township works committee have agreed with a Port Perry resident that four-way stop signs at the intersection of Caleb and Elgin Streets may help to slow traffic down in that part of the community. The committee agreed Monday morning to reinstall the four way stop signs as soon as possible. A month ago, long-time Caleb St. resident Janice Arksey wrote to tell council that since the removal of stop signs at Elgin St. a couple of years ago, some motorists have been treating the quiet residential street as "a speedway". And things are not much better on Caleb St, where there is excessive speeding and some motorists are ignoring the stop signs, she said. On a couple of occasions, a police patrol car was in the area but had no success in curbing speeders, because the cruiser was so visible that drivers had ample opportunity to slow down, she said. Acting works superintendent Terry Carson told the committee on Monday morning that twice in the past few weeks, he visited the intersection and agreed that in this instance, the four-way stop should be reinstated. "Traffic does move through (this intersection) at a fast clip," he told the meeting, adding that stop signs should not be used to "calm traffic" in all cases. However, he said, in this specific instance, there appears to be no other solution to the problem. Meanwhile, the works committee has received com- plaints from residents of Old Simcoe Rd. in Prince Albert about excessive speeding in the area around the public school. They are suggesting that the posted speed limit be lowered from the current 50 km to 40 km in the school zone on Old Simcoe Rd. They also suggest that brush clearing on the side of the road be done so that the speed signs are more visible to drivers. The committee will look at these suggestions.
