Sil SL Nl Sh st TN TL gr ATA at A i ! } 16 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 19, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Opinions split on trash plan From page 1 David Dietlein, the Ward 4 councillor, was among the resi- dents of Scugog who formed Zero Garbage, an anti-dump lobby in the early 90's. The group was formed to fight plans by the then NDP government at Queen's Park to establish several regional land- fill sites. He said that while resi- dents here were justified in fight- ing the government plan back then, the Adams Mine proposal is different. "It's up north, and | guess there isn't that much population there," said Councillor Dietlein, indicating his support for the Kirkland Lake scheme. : Still, he's concerned about the cost of disposing of this area's garbage in the north, and wonders if it won't take away the onus for residents here to reduce the waste they produce. Councillor Dietlein said he wants research on alternative mea- sures, including incineration, to continue here. And he said mea- sures such as deposits on bottles and some other forms of packaging would be incentive for people to recycle, rather than simply throw- ing items away. Both candidates for Scugog's regional council seat, current Ward 2 Councillor Ken Carruthers and school board trustee Bobbie Drew, said last week they have concerns about the region's move. "I think | would have to oppose it; | don't think it's the right move," said Councillor Carruthers. "It would seem to me there's got to be another solution... we could seriously damage the environment in that part of Ontario." At the same time, the councillor wants to avoid the establishment of huge new landfill sites here. He would like to see more considera- tion given to incineration, a method of waste management that's used widely and successfully in Europe. "There has to be some form of burning that can be and will be acceptable," said Councillor Carruthers. Regional council candidate Bobbie Drew would like to see more research done on the pro- posal and other options before the region votes on the matter. She feels the region is being pressured by Toronto officials to quickly approve the plan, and come on board. "I don't think there's any reason to march to Toronto's tune on this... this is too big an issue to make a hasty decision," said Mrs. Drew. Mrs. Drew is worried by the duration of an agreement to send waste to the north - 20 years - and by the possibility that an easy solution to waste disposal may mean that efforts to reduce are lessened. And environmental con- cerns raised by opponents of the plan can't be ignored, she said. "We've really got to get aggres- sive and start working out how we're going to reduce our garbage," said Mrs. Drew. When asked how she'd vote on the issue, she said, "I think I'd want to hold off until we've got the answers." Nestleton resident Colin Kemp, who also became involved in the fight against the NDP landfill plan several years ago, said the plan is likely to be rejected when voters in Kirkland Lake vote in the munic- ipal election in November; and that would mean the establish- ment of landfill sites here, he feels. "There may be a referendum question in the Kirkland Lake area, and 1 think they will say no, and then they'll have to find an alterna- tive," said Mr. Kemp. He feels that Durham's inclu- sion in the Greater Toronto Service Board area may make it a target site should the need arise to build new dumps in the Greater Toronto Area. "Because our local politicians have not got the guts to fight what's going on we are likely to become the City of Durham, and be dumped on again," he said. "I don't think this area is out of the woods as far as the potential for being selected as a dump site again, because 1 don't think Kirkland Lake will go through." ARI 8 0 SE SO BN te 1 Angry truckers vow to 'shut her down' From page 1 Durham MPP John O'Toole was the only provincial politician on hand to hear the frustration the room full of truckers and their families expressed as they told of working longer hours for less and less profit. "l understand the frus- tration these people are feeling and | will communi- cate it to the government," said Mr. O'Toole. Anita Boothe, who oper- ates a highway rig with her husband, screamed at the MPP from the audience. "They are telling us if we don't make our (truck) pay- ment this month to start lining up our (possessions) so they can be sold," she said. "They will take the wed- ding rings right off my hands, and then where will your tax dollars come from, when we are all on wel- fare?" she asked, as tears rolled down her face. Many of the truckers gathered at the Oshawa hotel said that as fuel prices top 75 cents per gal- lon, they will have to park their trucks and let finance companies take them. O'Toole Rising fuel prices have meant an average increase of $400 per week in over- head for truckers in the past year. The truckers said that Minister of Transportation Al Paladini has until 5 p.m. on Friday to show a com- mitment by the province in the form of tax relief on fuel prices. If nothing happens, as one driver shouted from the audience: "We shut her down. Nobody drives, and nothing moves." Organizers told media that under no circum- stances would they engage in actions like those seen in England last week, where highways were effectively shut down by truckers angry over the highest fuel prices in Europe. - The MinCom 3! n° SOLUTION CANTEBURY COMMON EXCLUSIVE THE RIGHT ADDRESS THE RIGHT PRICE THE RIGHT LIFESTYLE Set among nature trails, golf course club house and pool.
