"Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 26, 2000 - § Five arrested in connection with racist graffiti at school Members of the Durham Regional Police Street Crime Unit have made five arrests in connection with a graffiti ram- page at Port Perry High School that could cost $3,200 to fix. The first day of classes Sept. 5 was marred by the appearance of graffiti that was spray painted on three brick walls, several windows, street signs and portable walls at the school. Some of the slogans were of a racist nature that police investigators said appeared to be directed at a school staff 'member. A member of the Street Crime Unit called the slogans "very serious to us, and very disturbing." A spokesman for the unit said infor- mation from the public was helpful in leading to arrests. "We want to thank the public for their assistance in this case, and we want the community to know that we take these types of incidents with the utmost con- cern," he said. Jack Massie, superintendent for facili- ties with the Durham District School Board, told the Star that the cost to repair the damage will be high. "It will be about $3,200," Mr. Massie said. "If not for the fact that we have a good contractor with whom we have a relationship, it could well have been much higher." Charged with mischief under $5,000 are 18-year-old Colin Jefferson; 19-year- old Richard Hart, and 18-year-old Kimberly Brigley. Two youths who where also charged cannot be named under Young Offenders Act legislation. None of the accused were detained and all will appear in an Oshawa court at a date yet to be set. None of the allegations against the accused have been proven in court. The Star will follow the case as it progresses. Local man killed in Island Rd. crash J.
