8 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 26, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Community newspapers to recognize Junior Citizens Community newspa- pers across Ontario have recognized the spirit and achievements of more than 260 young people and 16 groups over the past 19 years. Nominations for the cur- rent program are now being accepted. All young people who are nominated receive a certificate recognizing the contributions they have made to their communi- ties. Up to 12 of the nomi- nees are then chosen to réceive the award, pre- sented by Ontario's Lieutenant Govemor dur- ing a special ceremony held in Toronto. Nominees may be involved in community service, have performed acts of heroism, be making contributions while living with limitations, or be 'good kids' who show a commitment to make life better for others. The young people liv- ing in our community are the best - help us to cele- brate their achievements, help us recognize their worth. Nominations will be accepted until Oct. 31. The Adult Day Program, begun last week, is a part- nership between Lakeridge Health Corp. and Lakeview Manor, a residence in Beaverton. Lakeview Manor is funded for programming five days a week, but the number of people enrolled in Beaverton required for just three days a week of programming. So an invita- tion was extended to Port Perry to host the- program for the other two days - Tuesdays and Thursdays. "The role of Port Perry is to host the site, and pro- vide the space," said Tina Demmers, director of the rehabilitation department at the local hospital. "It's a great partnership." Twice a week workers from Lakeview will operate their program in the rehab department here. They pro- vide a day-long program that includes exercise, interaction, hobbies, cook- ing, discussion groups and more for frail or cognitively impaired seniors, and adults over 18 with disabili- ties. Benefits of the program are two-fold, said Liz Powell, who represented Lakeview Manor at the open house last Tuesday. It Lakeview Manor staff member Amy Doble works with 89-year-old Bea Lindsay on stretching exercises during a session of the new Adult Day Program at Lakeridge Health Corp. in Port Perry. The program is a coop- erative effort between the local hospital and Lakeview Manor in Beaverton. allows for a day out and some stimulating activities for clients, and also gives family caregivers a day of respite. "Most of the people who come to these programs are living at home with family caregivers," she said. Ms Powell hopes to make the program known among the community, and noted that program avail- ability is not limited solely DENTAL CENTRE New Patients' Smiles Always Welcome * Dr. J. Cottrell *Dr. J. Larry O'Connor, Brock Township's regional coun- cillor and Durham Region's health and social services committee, said the coop- erative effort is an example of how to make limited gov- emment funding work well in rural communities. "If we try to work togeth- er we can get that commit- ment, and we can convince a sometimes difficult bureaucracy at Queen's Park that this is a worth- while community initiative," he said. "I think it's a really won- derful fit." Placement in the pro- gram is administered by Durham Access to Care; they can be reached at I- 800-668-5835.
