After a slow start to the election, which in its early going saw very few people declaring their intention to run, the Scugog Township clerk's office was abuzz Friday after- noon (Oct. 13), as the 5 p.m. deadline for nominations approached. In all, 23 people put their names forward for election. There will be a race for every office except that of trustee for the separate school board; Fred Jones of Oshawa will be DOUG MOFFATT acclaimed to the post, as Mayor incumbent incumbent Kathy LeFort did not register. Mrs. LeFort was on hand at the clerk's office Friday afternoon, ready to put her name forward should no one else seek the post. The most activity took place in Ward 5, where incumbent councillor Gary Mahony has decided not to seek reelection. When the dust cleared Friday, no fewer than five candidates had signed up to contest the ward, which encom- passes the north end of Port Perry and the resi- dential areas there. Meanwhile, the race for mayor could be entertaining, as old foes Howard Hall and incumbent Doug Moffatt square off. Mr. Hall, the for- mer mayor who was defeated in a bitter race by Mayor Moffatt in 1997, launched his campaign with a salvo aimed squarely at his opponent. Peter Hvidsten, right, who has spent the past 34 years at the newspaper, including 25 years as owner and publisher, sold The Port Perry Star to Mr. MacLeod, effective October 15th. The Star had been in the Hvidsten family since 1963, when Mr. Hvidsten's parents purchased the newspaper from the Farmer family. See story on page 4.
