ba Volume 134 Number 48 Federal vote to come Nov. 27 By Chris Hall Port Perry Star As expected, voters here and across Canada will go to the polls on Nov. 27 for a federal election. After months of rumours and speculation, Prime Minister Jean Chretien made it official on Sunday (Oct. 22). The Nov. 27 election will be the ; 4 third federal vote since 1993. Elections must be called every five years, but are typically called in the fourth year of the term. It was expected that the Liberals would call a fall election to take advantage of their popularity, and to head off any gains that might be made by the recently-formed Canadian Alliance Party. Defending his seat on Parliament Hill will be Durham MP Alex Shepherd, who's seeking a third term in office. The only challenger so far in Durham is Gerry Skipwith, of the Canadian Alliance Party. Interestingly, both men are Scugog residents. The Progressive Conservatives and New Democratic Party riding associations here have not yet nomi- nated candidates. Mr. Shepherd, of Seagrave, said Sunday that his party is sending Canadians to the polls, in part, to learn how they want the annual fed- eral surplus spent. "At the time of the last election issues like a surplus, debt reduction, (and) personal income deductions were largely theoretical," he said. I3 municipal election is held. Instead, voters here will use a vote by mail system, which will allow them to make their choices for Scugog council and return their ballot via Canada Post. Vote by mail packages will be going into the mail beginning tomorrow (Oct. 25), and area voters should be receiving them as early as this Friday (Oct. 27), says township page 16. clerk Kim Coates. She will serve as the township's returning officer for this elec- tion. In order to be counted, ballots must be returned to the township in the mail no later than Nov. 3. It is hoped that the new system will increase voter participation in the 2000 municipal election, says Ms Coates. "We're basically trying to increase voter turnout. This will allow people more access to the voting system," said Ms Coates.
