"I'm proud of this coun- cil, and I stand by its record and mine," said Mayor - Moffatt. When the floor was "opened for questions, one observer pressed Mr. Hall for more details on his chal- lenger's broken promises. "We've faced some problems for the past three years and we're still looking Customized Financial Plans Scugog's Financial Professional (905) 718-5897 at them. Nothing has hap- pened on some serious matters," said Mr. Hall. He noted that the cur- rent council has made no plans for looming municipal restructuring. When asked about pos- sible amalgamation and municipal restructuring, Mayor Moffatt said he wants no part of a "City of Durham" if the region were to merge into one large municipality. "It's silly and it's a short- term road to disaster. We have to come to a solution Hall on our own terms and time," he said. Are you getting the financial advice you really need? "A Sale Ends Nov. 30/00 Moffatt Mayor Moffatt was also asked about the potential for a Scugog-Uxbridge- Brock merger. "We could be better off, we could have less costs and better service," he said. "But, we won't find any alternatives by sticking our head in the sand." Also asked about amal- gamation was regional council hopeful Bobbie Drew. Scugog's public school trustee for the past 12 years, Mrs. Drew was quizzed on how the Durham school Stonemoor board handled amalgama- tion, and her experiences with that situation. "If you show you've done some restructuring, devel- oped partnerships with oth- ers and reduced the gov- ernment structure across Durham, that might be the ticket if enough is done," she said. "But, it's my expe- rience in the past is it's not enough." Her challenger, Ken Carruthers, also noted that "Scugog needs to steer clear of the south, and join with the northem munici- palities. It's not practical to merge with the south if we want to retain our small town way of life," he said. "Keeping Scugog the way it is is worth fighting for, and I'm sure most will agree." The question of repair- ing roads in Ward 4 was put to the two Cartwright candi- dates, incumbent David Dietlein and challenger Joyce Kelly. "Infrastructure in Scugog Day Care Centres Inc. "It's tough to say they need to be done, and it's even hard- er to actually do it." Mr. Dietlein noted that in the past, he's pushed for more money to be spent in the roads budget rather than recreation activities, and that he supports regu- lar maintenance of roads and ditches. Mayor Moffatt said the issue of Scugog's roads would be addressed in the future thanks to the town- ship's share of the proceeds from the Great Blue Heron Casino. It's a deal the incumbent said he and cur- rent regional councillor Ken Gadsden worked out for the municipality. Nestleton resident and Scugog council watchdog Colin Kemp tried to make things interesting during the evening. He accused Mrs. Drew of being a free-spending trustee in the past, and questioned her ability to show restraint at the council level. Mrs. Drew replied that the board had been required by law to avoid deficits, and had stuck by its budgets. And he targeted Mrs. Kelly, asking her if paper sludge was found to be detrimental to environ- ment, if she would take action. Mrs. Kelly replied that she expected such a ques- tion from Mr. Kemp, and that she would learn as much as she can about the issue before making any decisions.
