4 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 31, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Professional angler Peach seriously injured By Rik Davie Special to the Star Hector Peach, the well-known profes- sional angler from Scugog, is expected to recover from a freak accident that has left him paralyzed from the neck down. Fellow fishermen around Mr. Peach's home base of Port Perry, as well as mem- bers of the pro bass fishing tour across the province were stunned at news that he had * been paralyzed after a logging road gave way under a truck carrying Mr. Peach and two other men. The men were near North Bay on a hunting trip. Mr. Peach was airlifted to hospital in Thunder Bay, and then transferred to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto. Peter Davidson of Port Perry has known Mr. Peach for 33 years, and for 15 years has teamed up with Mr. Peach on the pro bass fishing circuit. for him to regain much of his motor skills with intensive therapy." Mr. Davidson said that Mr. Peach's fami- ly is trying to make plans for him to return home as early as Christmas. "He is waiting to be moved into (a ther- apy centre) as soon as they can. His wife is with him every day and his spirits are good," Mr. Davidson said. "He is a truly pro- fessional fisherman, and he already told me he wants to be back fishing next year. He is entirely dedicated to fishing." That dedication showed this year when the two won the final Pro Bass tournament of the year on Balsam Lake. Hector Peach "He has started to regain some feeling in his arms," Mr. Davidson said in an inter- view with The Star Sunday. "The prognosis, | am now told, is good John MacDonald, a three-time Bass Classic winner from Peterborough, told The Star that Hector Peach's influence has been felt by many of the current top Ontario anglers. "When | was an amateur in 1990, my dream was to be paired with him in the Pro- Am... and it happened that | was. We have been friends ever since, and we room together from time to time on the circuit," said Mr. MacDonald. "If anybody has the will power to come back from this, it is Hector. He has the drive to make it, and | know that he will." Local fishermen are going to area bait and tackle shops, like J&D Fishing and Archery on Water St. in Port Perry where funds are being collected and cards being signed to be sent to Mr. Peach. His home may require some renovation when he returns to convalesce. In a world as competitive as profession- al fishing, Hector Peach has stood out as one of the nice guy success stories for many years. In addition to a successful career on the competitive circuit, Mr. Peach is well- known for his participation in the Casting Kids program, which encourages young- sters to develop a love for fishing.
