8 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 31, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Youth group rocks all night for charity By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star They were rocking all night at the Hope Christian Reformed Church in Prince Albert. But the neighbours weren't complaining. Because it wasn't rock and roll going on at the church; rather, it was a fundraising rock-a-thon. Some 20 youth group members and leaders from the church sat down in rock- ing chairs at 8 p.m. Friday night, and rocked until 8 a.m. Saturday moming, rais- ing almost $400 for Ronald McDonald House. It's a char- itable organization that pro- vides accommodation for the families of children enduring hospital stays. Jamie Sheridan is a leader of the Hope Church youth group H20, which stands for Hearts To Offer. He said the group chose Ronald McDonald House after one of their members, Matt Bruinsma, was injured in a four-wheeler accident last summer and spent a couple of weeks in hospital. His parents stayed in a Ronald McDonald House in London. The young people embraced the unique fundraiser with enthusiasm, collecting pledges and then spending 12 hours overnight in their rockers, said Mr. sheridan. They took just five-minute breaks each hour to stretch. "That's one of the themes of this group," said Mr. Sheridan. "they do this kind of service." As the sun rose Saturday morning, participants were looking forward to getting out of their chairs. They were tantalized by the smells of a bacon and egg breakfast, being prepared in the kitchen of the Old Simcoe Rd. church by vol- unteers. Those folks were among several who offered support during the 12-hour stint, said Mr. Sheridan. He said other members of the Scugog church community had been dropping by through the night, deliver- ing coffee and other essen- tials, including moral sup- port. "It's been a really nice community effort," said Mr. Sheridan. Among those spending 12 hours in a rocker was Matt Bruinsma' father, Ron. He was impressed with the effort put forth by the youth group in support of what he called a good cause. He and his wife spent two weeks at the London Ronald McDonald house while Matt was on the Ricky Vanandel curls up with a video game as mend i i na. dawn approaches Saturday morning, nearing the hor ey do 2 wonderful job end of his 12-hour stint in a rocking chair. Future Growth After 5 years of study I believe the Township's Official Plan is a clear statement for limited growth throughout the municipality. Commercial and employment areas have been clearly defined. While I believe that this plan has set in motion what the community wants I think it is vital we have an open mind on all issues of planning. Public input will continue to be an important consideration in changes to our future growth. Environment As one of a 5- member federal environmental advisory board I have been inspired by the many imaginative solutions and determined efforts to correct environmental problems in the many communities within Ontario. Now, more than ever, it is important for us to find alternative solutions to our garbage problems. We must divert more from the landfill sites by supporting a more vigorous plan to REDUCE, REUSE & RECYCLE. ...to be continued CARRUTHERS sd ae] [®] " P.\ =.
