"Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 7, 2000 - 1 Federation of agriculture to host candidate meeting here A federal candidates forum to address agricultural issues is being held at the Scugog Community Centre in Port Perry on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Candidates from all five ridings which cover Durham Region have been invited to attend. The forum is sponsored by the Durham Region Federation of Agriculture. Although the focus of the evening will be on agricultural issues, the general public is invited to attend and ask for candidates questions on any topic. "Agriculture is one of the predomi- nant contributions to the regional econo- my," said David Barry, president of the Durham Region Federation of Agriculture. "We want to make sure that the voters of Durham Region have a chance to hear what the candidates have to say on nary ing issues.' "In light of what the year 2000 has brought for farmers in the way of weath- er, affected yields and low commodity prices, it can't be stressed enough that the agricultural community is in for a tough year," he said. "Everyday, our lives are touched in some way by agriculture. Food affects everyone and the production of food is tied directly to many other issues, such as health, the environment, and the economy. We feel that agricultural issues need to be in the spotlight for this fed- eral election." The Durham Region Federation of Agriculture hopes that by publicizing where the candidates stand on agricul- ture, that this will provide a more informed voter on election day.
