Residents of Chester Cres. in Port Perry awoke at 6 a.m. on Friday (Nov. 3) to find heavily-armed members of the Durham Regional Police Tactical Support Unit racing to surround a home in the quiet residential neighborhood. Police entered the home and arrested 23-year-old William Raymond Zaparanuik on conspiracy, drug and firearms charges. At the same time, police entered a Sexton St. home and arrested Stephen Joseph Ball, also on conspiracy, drug and gun related offenses. The raids were the climax of a three-month under cover operation nick-named Project Extraction. The investigation involved officers from the Durham Regional Police Service, the Ontario Provincial Police provincial firearms unit, the Toronto Police Service, and members of both the OPP and Durham Canine units. The Port Perry Minor Hockey Association (PPMHA) has turned to the police to patrol the stands after incidents at the Scugog Arena involving local teens, says association president Rick Penstone.
