A total of 12 people have so far been arrested in the wake of police raids at addresses in Toronto, Port Perry, Oshawa and Bowmanville. Evidence seized in the raids included two semi- automatic handguns; a sawed-off rifle; ammuni- tion; prohibited weapons; several thousand dollars worth of crack cocaine and marijuana; hydroponics equipment for growing marijuana, and alleged pro- ceeds of crime which included several thousand dollars in cash, a snowmo- bile, and a four-wheel all- terrain vehicle. One of the guns confis- cated was among numer- ous firearms stolen from a Port Perry residence in 1996, said a police source. Also among the items seized during the raids was a copy of the book I'd Rather Be Wanted Than Had, penned by the infamous Mickey McArthur, said a source. McArthur was convicted of a vicious bank robbery in Port Perry in 1994 that saw three police officers and two civilians shot. And a source said the alleged kidnapping plot may have targeted a drug- dealing associate. Detective Stan Pinkney of the Durham Regional Police's armed robbery unit led the investigation. Following is a list of charges laid so far: o William Raymond Zaparanuik is charged with conspiracy to commit kid- napping; conspiracy to commit wounding; conspir- acy to commit armed rob- bery; trafficking in a firearm; possession of a weapon obtained by crime; breach of a court order; unautho- rized possession of a firearm; two counts of pos- session of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking; pos- =moUUAR session of the proceeds of crime; possession of ammunition contrary to court order; conspiracy to traffic in both marijuana and crack cocaine; posses- sion of a prohibited weapon with ammunition, and conspiracy to trafficin a firearm. Qo Stephen Joseph Ball, 21, of Sexton St. in Port Perry, is charged with pos- session of a prohibited firearm; breach of a court order; possession of ammunition contrary to a court order; trafficking in a firearm; fail to comply; pos- session of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking; pos- session of the proceeds of crime; conspiracy to traffic marijuana, and conspiracy to traffic in a firearm. a James Edward Wells, 23, formerly of Port Perry, was arrested at a Toronto address and charged with breach of an undertaking and failure to comply. a Jada D.
