ROYAL BANK 210 Queen Street, Port Perry By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The owners of a Water St. building that was destroyed by fire earlier this year appeared before Scugog council yesterday afternoon, seeking approval for their new site plan. The Pizza Delight restaurant was destroyed in a spectacular mid-day fire March 19. Plans for the demolition of the remains and construction of a new 7,000 square- foot building were brought before council yesterday. The building is owned by Brian Callery and his wife JoAnne, as well as Tom and Daphne Mitchell. "We're planning on assembling a 7,000 & square-foot building fol- o lowing a similar footprint of the previous building, only this time it will be Lo more efficient," said Mr. ace Callery. The new building will extend more north- to-south, he said, using up more of the space available on the lot, and eliminating an existing alleyway. "We're going to fill the entire lot; it will be wider CARTWRIGHT HIGH SCHOOL Commencement Exercises will be held on Friday, November 10, 2000 8:00pm Cartwright Central Public School - Gymnasium Presentation of Diplomas, Proficiency Prizes, Ontario Scholars, Valedictory Address, Governor General's Medal JUDY SPRING WARD 7 OSHAWA Experienced, Dedicated ¢& Responsible Plan submitted to township this time, but it won't be as deep," said Mr. Callery. "It'll be a two-storey building keeping with the Victorian theme in the downtown area." Upon receiving coun- cil's approval, he hopes to have the remaining building demolished by the end of November, with construction begin- ning soon thereafter He would like to see the new building completed as early as March of next year. While he admits that the building in its current state was an eyesore for the entire community, Mr. Callery said he couldn't do much with it until all the details had been wrapped up with the insurance company. A decision had to be made if repairs were to be done to the building, orif a new building was to be constructed, he said; then time had to be allot- ted for engineers' assess- ments and architectural drawings. The new building will follow the same basic outline as its predeces- sor, complete with upstairs apartments, said Mr. Callery. Owners will rebuild on site of Water St. blaze "The main floor will be approximately 3,500 square feet, and the apartments upstairs will be close to 2,000 square feet," said Mr. Callery. There could be as many as six one-bedroom apartments in the build- ing, he said. Mr. Callery said some interest in the property has been expressed, including a proposal for another family restaurant. The March fire, which caused an estimated $500,000 damage, is still being investigated by Durham Police. It is thought the fire was either started by faulty electrical wiring or by vandals, said Mr. Callery. for a chance to WIN A ) $ & Shopping Spree W A winner each and every }% week until Christmas! 183 Queen St, Port Perry | (905) 985-8234 and orchid family. ripens. or sodium + | medium NAME THAT FOOD! by Bronwen Tuck, R.D.
