20 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 14, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Large crowd gathered at memorial Saturday for Remembrance Day ceremony Fallen comrades honoured at Blackstock Cenotaph A large crowd attended the annual Remembrance Day Service held at the Rec. Centre and Cenotaph on Saturday morn- ing. Following the March on the Colours, Mayor Doug Moffatt wel- comed everyone on behalf of Scugog Township. O'Canada was sung and scripture was read by Merrill Van Camp in the absence of Councillor David Dietlein. Rev. Hugh Kernohan gave a thought provoking address followd by a Prayer of Remembrance by Rev. Phil Hobbs. Following the singing of a hymn "Weep for the Dead" the group paraded to the Cenotaph. There members of the Port Perry Legion led the service which included Reading of the Honour Roll, the Last Post, two minutes of silence, Reveille and the Laying of wreaths by various levels of government and groups. A very impressive service of remembrance. This week the Blackstock. Co- op Nursery School will be open as of Nov. 14. The new teacher is Janis Pashley. There are openings for Tuesday and Thursday morn- ings. Please call 985-4585 for more information. This is great news as the local nursery school is one of the longest running co- op nursery schools in Ontario and has a wonderful history. Best wishes to the organizers that have been able to re-open it after a short closure. Congratulations to Phil and Jennifer McLeod on the arrival of a baby girl last week. First time grandma Linda Arbuckle is beaming these days. Last week Cecil and Marie Gibson were overnight guests of their friends Les and Viva Harrison of Bobcaygeon. While there they also visited Marie's brother Gordon Tripp in the nursing home. A capacity crowd attended the Cartwright High School Commencement Exercises held at the Cartwright Central Public School on Firday evening. Miranda Wylie conducted the Invocation after which Principal Karen Allan, Carla McLaughlin, Prime Minister of Student's Council 'and Bobbie Drew, trustee, all gave remarks. Highest Grade Average were won by Robert Larmer, Grade 9, Larua Batterink, Grade 10, Dawn Hall, Grade 11, Rebecca Barnhoorn, OAC - Julie Obstfeld. Most Improved Students were Amanda Drew and Matthew Campbell. Volunteer service - Robert Larmer, Catherine DeJong. Proficiency prizes for various subjects were awarded as follows: Grade 9 - Lisa Danilko, Heather Poole, Nicole Beechey, Robert Larmer and Abby McLaughlin. Grade 10 - Laura Batterink, Kyle Vernest, Lori Powell, Jessica McLaughlin, Catherine DeJong, Devon Bradburn and Carrie Joyce. Best wishes is extended to all of the graduates as they go into their new fields - wherever that might lead them. At the Blackstock United Church Service on Sunday morn- ing the Sacrament of Baptism was conducted by Rev. Phil Hobbs when Clay Nelson Larmer, son of Margo and Craig was received. Rev. Hobbs conducted a Remembrance Service which included an excellent: sermon. The Sunday School children returned for the concluding sec- tion of the service for their partic- ipation. : Margo and Craig Larmer host- ed a family gathering in honour of Clay's Baptism. Guests were Gary and Dolores McGregor, Petrolia, Janice Clubb and daugh- ters, Brigden, Reg and Lynne White Hastings, Joyce McLean, Thornbury, Tammy and Darren Mason and family of Whitby, Kristen and Brian Deslslet and Nicholas of Oshawa, Doug and Joyce Larmer and family of Greenbank, Glenn and Marion Larmer, Blackstock, Rev. Phil and Carol Hobbs of Peterborough. At the Tuesday evening card party there were 15 tables with the following winners: Marj Davies, Charlie Stapleton, Harry Hill, Merv Storie, Joan Sutcliffe who also had the most lone hands and Muriel Selby. Draws were won by Harold Crawford, Betty Hockley, Gary Notenboom, Les Johnston, Merv Storie and Bonnie Davies. Greenbank Sunday School Christmas Concert is fast approaching By Doris Hill Greenbank news The family greeters and ushers at church on Sunday were Brian and Janice Lee, Katelyn, Russel and Tyson. A beauti- ful Memorial Day Service was held at the + church service with Neil Hunter presenting the Liturgy. Ruth Foster placed the wreath in memory of Stan and others who served. There was a minute of silence following the playing of the "Last Post." Linda Hunter, Rita Stickwood and daughter Jackie sang the offertory duet accompanied by Betty Stone. Susan Garrett reported that Greenbank - had packed 62 shoe boxes of gifts to be sent where needed. The Sunday School Christmas Concert is fast approaching. Mark your calendar on Friday, Dec. | at 7:30 p.m. and don't miss out on this fun-filled show featuring our children. Included in the evening will be songs, recitations, skits, puppets, junior choirs, and of course we look forward to a special visit from the jolly old elf. The Youth Choir ages 10 and up will practice Wednesday, Nov. 15 from 5 to 6 p.m at the church upstairs. The Primary Choir ages six to nine will practice at 5 p.m. downstairs. All singers welcome. The Greenbank Session will meet Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the church. The White Gift Service will be held at Greenbank Church on Sunday, Dec. 10. All gifts will go to Operation Scugog. Linda Hunter, Hugh and Roberta Baird, and Murray Stone participated in the Bless Emall Memorial Day Concert at Port Perry United Church on Saturday afternoon and evening. It was featuring songs of World War II. Jennifer Hunter hosted the Greenbank ladies ball team windup on Saturday evening at her home. Local winners with Holsteins at the Royal Winter Fair were Phoenix Bros. win- ning the first prize in Senior Calf and Reserve Junior Champion. In the Scotiabank Hays Classic 4-H Show first prize winner Jr. Showman Alec Stone, third prize winner Sr. Showman Carl Phoenix, first and Champion Showman Joel Phoenix. First Senior Calf was shown by Michael Phoenix who also won the Champion Showman Presidents Cup. Alec, Michael and Joel won first as a group of three. Congratulations boys. Next Millennium Committee meeting scheduled for Nov. 21 Church service this week will be held in Utica at 11 am. The Millennium Committee will hold their next meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 8 p.m. in Utica Hall. All interested peo- ple are welcome. Bethesda-Reach Women's Institute will hold their next meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 22 at 7.45 p.m. in Epsom Church. The subject is Tweedsmuir History and guest will be Paul Arculus. For roll call bring an antique item or picture (75+ years). Utica Hall has it's new flag pole erected. (Where's the flag?) If any- one wonders what the cannister is that is attached, that's the time Utica & Epsom capsule that will hold the memorabilia that the Millennium Committee is collecting. | understand that we have Arnold Kerry to thank for the construction of this. It was a cold and windy day on Saturday for the auction sale on the 6th Line farm of Cathy an Mike Acerra. The U.C.W. held a very successful lunch counter, thanks to all the ladies ~ who sent baking, made sandwiches, etc., the cus- tomers who supported us and to the Acerra's for providing such a warm and convenient place to operate from. The community sends its condolences to Mel and Karen Tindall in the passing of their daughter Logan who fought a brave battle with cancer. Services will be on Tuesday at 2 p.m. from Low & Low in Uxbridge. Thursday visitors with Ruth Ashton were Mabel Lehane of Columbus and Marilyn Searle of Kedron.
