Three times, in fact. For the third time in his motocross racing career, the Scugog Island resident has claimed both the provincial and national championships. The most recent title coming this year, after taking top spot in the Canadian Motocross Association's Ontario Circuit Veterans Class. His other championships came in 1980, and again in 1992. "I had another good year," said Mr. Goreski, 44. "Some of the courses are pretty tough, but you've just got to use your head and make the best of what the course has to offer." During the past season, Mr. Goreski rode his 2000 KTM 200 machine to four first-place finishes and three second- place results in the seven-race schedule. This year, six races were held through- out Ontario, with the seventh being staged in Northern Quebec. Each race runs approximately 160- kilometres through rugged trails and bush, where competitors average about 36-kilometres an hour. The points he accumulated during the 2000 season were good enough to win both the provincial and national champi- onships. As well, the Scugog Island resident has placed well in international competi- tion. In 1986, he competed in Italy at the International Six-Day Enduro, where he eventually finished third and received a bronze medal. Mr. Goreski is supported in his racing adventures by Oshawa Cycle Salvage and his wife, Darla. It was an exciting finish last Saturday as Port scored with no time left to defeat Omemee 5-4 in front of the home crowd. Jonathan Brouse jammed in the loose puck during a mad melee in front of the net after Nathan Scott did a good job of getting the puck in the opponent's end. Aaron Ashbridge picked up the other assist on this timely game winning goal. Reid Stewart also came up big making Jonathon Brouse's late goal gives Tykes 5-4 win over Omemee huge saves late in the game as Omemee peppered him with shots. Reid made several stand up saves including one high shot that knocked him clear off his feet as well as a breakaway save on Omemee's big scorer. The score was close all game as Port couldn't shut down one talented Omemee player who notched all four Turn to Page 23 Scugog Island's Kelly Goreski recently wrapped up the 2000 motocross sea- son by winning both the provincial and national championships.
