Funds from the sales are used to assist area veterans, the disabled, and the local hospital. Mr. Thompson said that now mer- chants may begin to think twice about helping out, if they have to be on the lookout for thieves. "The businesses here are really, really good about letting us leave boxes in their stores and canvass out- side of them," he said. this," said Mr. Thompson last week. Each year local Legion members "But if they start to think they have to be watching out for the boxes... i may become a little bit of a hassle for them, and they may not be as interest- ed anymore." The theft was discovered early last week when a volunteer went into the coffee shop to fill up the box. "It was taken sometime between Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening," said Coffee Time owner Jimmy Constantinou. "The volunteer came to fill it up and it was gone. What happened in Scarborough was disgusting, but for it to happen here...." he said, referring to an incident incident in which a volun- teer was assaulted and robbed of her poppy money. Mr. Constantinou offered to write a cheque for $40 to help cover the stolen funds. "He offered, but we couldn't accept it. It's not his fault; he didn't steal the money," said Mr. Thompson. "It's just terrible that this kind of thing happened. We're trying to raise some money for the people in this community and help out and someone just walks off with a poppy box," he said.
