The last couple of weeks have been more steeped in politics than many of us can probably remember. First, there was the most exciting U.S. presidential election in recent memory, the outcome of which still hangs in the balance. Then came last night's municipal vote, which saw the residents of Scugog elect their mayor, regional councillor, ward councillors, and public school trustee. And in just under two weeks, we'll make another trip to the polls to vote in a federal election. | Anybody who's not excited by all this- or who has not seized the opportunity to vote - is missing an important point: We live in the best country in the world, and it's precisely because it's up to us to choose our leaders and set government agendas that it's so. Your vote - that privilege, that right, that symbol of individ- uality and freedom - is the key to the continuation of democ- racy. It is often said, with a heavy sigh for emphasis, that it doesn't matter whether or not you vote, and that even if you do, the politicians will go ahead and do whatever they want, "And Fs true, they will, Unless there is st tat Sccos naits true, they will. Unless there is strong representation I 7 at the polls, and a Y loar message sent to the candidates. Z ZZ In this most recent municipal election, Scugog Township Z _ brought the vote to you, introducing a mail-in ballot system | in the hopes that it would cut down on costs, and increase <7 "PI | voter participation. There was no reason not to vote. td And on Nov. 27, you'll be called upon again to cast a ballot in the federal election. It's government on a larger scale, but your vote is just as important; just look at what's happening in Florida if you don't think so. One election down; one to go. Democracy: You gotta love it. -- ------------- MUNICIPAL ELECTION DECLAR WINNER 5b RADDA PorT PERRY STAR Port Remember When? Perry Star Letter of the Week A pool is possible for Scugog To the Editor: Re: "Report Questions Cost For New Township Pool," Port Perry Star, Tuesday, Oct. 31 Scugog municipal council has stated at a recent meeting of town council that the costs for construct- ing a 30 by 60 foot outdoor pool "may be too high for a facility that at best will get eight weeks use by the public each summer" Parks and recreation director Jay Todd estimates that with the costs of excavating, fencing, lifeguard sta- tions, etc., the price of the pool could come as high as $300,000. Constructing a public swimming pool does not need to be such a major financial obstacle for this township. It is not necessary to have a pool as large as 30x60 feet. The pool needs only to be slightly larger than the one which was, for along time, located in Birdseye Park. The township could approach Port Perry Dairy, located on Water St., across from Palmer Park, as it looked in 1940. Behind it is the Supertest gas station owned by Irwin Tripp, and barely visible among the trees is the home of former Port Perry Reeve Joshua W. Curts. It was just announced last week that the old dairy building, which was partially destroyed by fire earlier this year, will be demolished and a new { building erected on the same site. J Cun ---- local construction and excavation businesses for discounts to aid in the construction of a new pool. The township could also explore various forms of fundraising. For example: a silent auction with items donated by local merchants, private donations, and setting out coin collections in the stores and businesses around town. Instead of complaining about the cost of a new municipal pool, why doesn't the township start exploring possibilities to make a new public pool possible. I still welcome any letters sup- porting the construction of a pool. Thank you to those who have already written to me. My mailing address is: 440 Fralick's Beach Rd., Port Perry, Ontario, LOL 1B6.
