12 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 28, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Show continues this weekend Talented cast makes 'King and I a delight By Heather McCrae Port Perry Star If you've been hearing people humming tunes like I Whistle A Happy Tune, Getting To Know You or Hello, Young Lovers, chances are they've seen the Scugog Choral Society's production of The King and I, now play- ing at Town Hall 1873. The Rodgers & Hammerstein classic is a Visit our brand new decorator must see. The Choral Society is staging an ambi- tious production with a cast of 49 actors, the youngest of whom is five years old. The King And | takes you inside the walls of the King's palace in 19th cen- tury Imperial Siam. Theatre goers will be amazed at the fabulous set, which depicts the designed model home! * Bungalows, front split level and 2-storey detached homes. * Standard luxuries include: gas fireplaces, all vinyl windows & 40 oz carpet flooring (where applicable). ! y is 720 Designs up ta 2,900 sq.ft. v 0. While the set was con- structed by Steve Lee, Rick Huntington, Gord Jones and Ryan Edgar, the painting was done by Taya Campbell, Katy Jay, Sara Hansen, Heather Kanabe, Julie Lamb, Lisa Para, Amber Park, Liz Saunders, Jessica Shaw, Daya Sturgess, Marta Van Camp and Jamie van Egomond, Det. wched ay, all students of Dennis Schilling's visual arts class at PPHS. Also giving the show visual impact is the wide array of bright, colourful costumes. The story tells about the arrival of an English woman, Anne Leonowens (Kyffen Gaudet) who has been summoned by the King of Siam (Dave Silvestri) to teach his chil- dren. Anna, an independent, unconventional British school teacher, and the proud and powerful but good-hearted king are at loggerheads with each other soon after her arrival. But, over time, Anna and the King come to a more mutual understand- ing of one another. While it's a dazzling cast of 49 that brings The King And | to the stage, Mr. Silvestri and Ms Gaudet are the main attraction. Both have appeared in Scugog Choral Society pro- ductions before, including Guys and Dolls and Into The Woods. Ms Gaudet, a French Immersion teacher at R. H. Cornish Public School, says the most difficult part of her role was learning to speak in a British accent. And to get accustomed to the role of the King, Mr. Silvestri had his head shaved. The hard part, he says, was getting used to the cold. Three generations of one Port Perry family star in The King And I. Gretel Cameron, who plays the part of Lady Thiang, is joined on stage by her daughter, Margie Barton (one of the many royal wives), and granddaughter, Shannon Barton (Princess Ying Yaowlak). The King And | opened last Thursday and contin- ues Nov. 30, December |, 2, 7, 8 and 9 at 8 p.m. There is a 2 p.m. matinee on Dec. 3. The doors open half an hour before the cur- tains rise.
