A winner each week until Christmas Township removes unsafe playground set Unsafe equipment removed By Chris Hall Port Perry Star After years of use, the playground equipment has been removed from Palmer Park. Deemed unsafe by the Durham Region Health Department more than a year ago, the equipment was finally scuttled and removed from the lake- side park in Port Perry on Friday. A new set of play- ground equipment is scheduled to be installed by the end of this week. "That was the last unit that had been identified as having major problems by the health depart- ment," Jay Todd, Scugog's Parks and Recreation director, said yesterday morning. "The new equipment should be installed Friday, and it will be big- ger to accommodate a few more kids." During inspections last year, health department officials noticed a num- ber of flaws with the aging equipment, said Mr Todd. Among those concerns were problems with lad ME je wy ~~ = Township workers were at Palmer Park last week, removing playground equipment that's been deemed unsafe. "There were a variety of things wrong with the equipment; we could have fixed it here and there and pieces, but there were just too many things that were inade- quate and had to be replaced," said Mr. Todd. The cost of the new equipment for Palmer Park will be about $20,000, he said. Council designated money for the new equip- ment last year. Equipment in the Nestleton and Greenbank parks will also be addressed in the near future, added Mr. Todd. "We decided not to do it in the summer because it's used so much by the people who live here and Jo Celebrate Being TEN YEARS In the business, Raj Bhatia would like to invite our customers for refreshments on Saturday, Dec. 2/2000 between 10am. - 4pm. As for the possibility of selling some of the used equipment, Mr. Todd noted that the play- ground set was not CSA (Canadian Safety Association) approved, and that the township could not afford any pos- sible liability problems. do gg lo ni nis,
