"Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 28, 2000 - § Port Perry man arrested in huge police investigation By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star A Port Perry man is among several sus- pects arrested in connection with the theft of commercial cargo, including several trac- tor-trailer loads. Toronto Police reported the arrests last week. The busts came after a nine-month probe involving several policing agencies. "Project Crustacean" began in February of this year. Its aim was to target the theft of tractor trailer loads, as well as break-ins at commercial properties. York, Durham, Peel, and Hamilton-Wentworth Regional Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police cooperated with Toronto Police on the effort. The investigation identified "criminal organizations" that were responsible for the theft of tractor-trailer loads, as well as theft from commercial properties, Toronto Police said in a statement last week. Police also identified locations throughout the Greater Toronto Area that were used by the groups to store and distribute the stolen property. Last Monday, Nov. 20, numerous search warrants were executed at warehouses, resulting in the recovery of 17 tractor trailer loads, as well as partial loads from four other trucks, and property stolen from com- mercial locations. So far 20 people have been arrested. They face a total of 199 criminal charges. Police estimate the value of the property recovered at more than $12 million. Among those arrested was a Port Perry man, 56-year-old Leslie Barber. He has been charged with three counts of conspir- acy to commit an indictable offence, and one count of possession of stolen property over $5,000, according to Sgt. Jim Grimley of Durham Regional Police. Sgt. Grimley was unable to say if stolen property had been recovered in Scugog Township. More arrests are expected, police said.
