A= J hi RNA SAAN Sa TIRE "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December §, 2000 - 15 Event targets drinking and driving Students' 'mix it up' to deliver strong message By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Students will be mixing it up at Port Perry High School Wednesday, making drinks that pack a punch: The message that drinking and driving kills. They'll be creating tasty non-alcoholic drinks, and delivering catchy slogans, all in an effort to help reinforce the anti-drinking and driving message that is so important as the holidays approach. Port Perry High School is one of several across the region holding a Mix It Up event, said teaching assistant Wendy Hudgins, who is working with the group Port Perry High Against Impaired Driving to promote it. Thirteen teams of three have signed up for the event, which takes place at noon tomor- row in the school cafeteria. judges will award the teams points based on the tastiness of the "mocktails" they make, and the effectiveness of their road safety slogan. The kids are also awarded points for their presentations, and the enthusiasm they show. Ms Hudgins said the event serves the dual purpose of reinforcing the message about impaired driving, and can also give party-goers some ideas for tasty, non-alco- holic beverages this Christmas season. The effort was begun by the provincial transportation ministry, and the Canadian Automobile Association. Schools across the province have been encouraged to partici- pate. Winners from Port Perry High School will advance to a regional competition. And when the project is done, the best recipes will be compiled into a book that will be made available to the public. "It's going beyond the schools and into the community," said Ms Hudgins. She hopes the other element of the com- petition - the road safety messages com- posed by the teams - will help advance the theme with their peers. "It's them coming up with their message she said. "I think kids listen to kids more than they do adults." n ' ER ' Call 985-9777 www.rid £3 ¥ genorth.on.ca
