Wally Nesbitt From Corner Five The North American racing season has been over for several weeks now, so withdrawal symptoms in the diehard race fan may be becoming evident. Unfortunately, there will be no cure for L.O.M. (Lack Of Motorsports) available until February but to ease the pain a little, here is a small dose of local pit patter. In 2001, Mosport Raceway will mark its 40th anniver- sary and just in time for the celebration the track has received a further million dollars worth of renovations. Visitors to the legendary road course in the coming year will recognize that the entire track has been widened to 'FIA standards (40 feet) and the full 2.459 mile circuit (including the pit lane), has been repaved. The retain- ing walls through corners two and four have been moved back six meters and extensive landscaping on the infield side of turn three has eliminated the old gravel pit, allowing a better sight line in turns two and three. The Mosport Raceway schedule has been set with the Trans-Am series returning on their traditional Victoria Day Weekend date, the Castrol CASCAR Super Series following on June 23 and 24, the Vintage Festival running June 29 to July I, and the American Le Mans Series Grand Prix being staged on Aug. 17 to 19. The Canadian SuperBike Championship will return, however a date is not available at this time. Mosport Speedway held their year end banquet at the Port Perry Community Centre on Nov. || with the awards ceremony being the highlight of the evening. MoJacks drop 5-2 decision to defending league champs By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star seasons with the Uxbridge Bruins. MoJack's General Manager Murray game, McQuade got his second of the contest od, however, as Dustin Heard notched a short- Chiefs scored four in the middle period and then Patience and experi- ence were the order of the day for the Lakefield Chiefs as they did all their scoring in the sec- ond and third periods en route to a 5-2 win over the Port Perry Mojacks on Sunday night. After spotting the Mojacks a 1-0 lead that stood up through the first 20 minutes of play, the added an empty-netter to cement the win at the Scugog Arena. Ryan McQuade got the only goal of the first frame, an even strength effort just four minutes in with an assist to MoJack's captain Shane Norton. It didn't take the visi- tors long to find their skating legs and shooting sights in the second peri- handed marker after 58 seconds of action. Pat Gowlan added another at the mid-point of the period -- this one on a power play. With 7:11 left, Aaron Garvey got what proved to be the game winner. For the MoJacks, who to their credit never stopped working and skating through this with under a minute to play to cut the Chief lead to 4-2. Norton and Adam Mercer drew the assists on this goal. But that was as close as they could get as the teams battled back and forth through the third period with the Chiefs doing enough to keep the MoJacks off the score- board. Read Us on Paper! The MoJacks announced Sunday what is described as a "signifi- cant change to the line- up." Netminder lan Watson has joined the club and was in the cage against the Chiefs Sunday night. He turned in a very solid effort considering he has not had much competitive playing time so far this season. In fact, the work of Watson between the iron was a factor in keeping the MoJacks within striking distance of the Chiefs for the better part of the match. Junior C fans will be familiar with Watson, as he was a first-string net- minder for the past two For reasons not clear at this time, Watson was not playing Junior hockey this season until he was signed by the MoJacks last week. General manager Murray Parliament is encouraged by the addi- tion of this veteran Junior C netminder to the roster, telling The Port Perry Star that if he can provide the kind of netminding that he displayed against the Chiefs it should give the rest of the team a mea- sure of confidence. To make room for Watson, the MoJacks released Orono native and rookie Scott Poole, while retaining the ser- vices of Jeff Rankine. The MoJacks can use a boost in confidence right now as the Central League heads down the stretch towards the play Turn to Page 23
