TTI HH I IE. "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Curling Club hopes to reopen for Boxing Day PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December §, 2000 - § Christmas spirit at museum By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Work is progressing quickly at the Port Perry Curling Club, and members hope to finish repairs to the refrigeration Sys- tem in time for holiday season bon- spiels. If all goes well, new piping should be installed by the end of this week and upgraded equipment in the plant room should be hooked up, says club past- president Roger Moase. "We're going to be laying pipes and hooking up the new equipment this week. God willing, if all goes well, we should be flipping the switch and mak- ing ice by (Dec. 11)," said Mr. Moase last Friday. A small pinhole leak was discovered a few months ago in the piping under- neath the ice surface. The entire refriger- ation system had to be replaced. The old ammonia-based system, which was installed when the clubhouse was built 42 years ago, has been deemed unsafe. Significant changes and upgrades were deemed necessary. "We're working hard out there on the arena floor, but thankfully we've had tremendous support from everyone. We've had 25 or 30 people out there night after night getting the floor ready for the new piping," said Mr. Moase. The plant room has been gutted and new refrigeration equipment was expect- ed to arrive last weekend. The new pip- ing is scheduled to be delivered by the middle of this week. If everything goes as planned, the club hopes to hold its annual Boxing Day bonspiel, and then begin league sched- ules starting Jan. |. "The old system owes us nothing. It's held up well over the years, but there's never a good time to go through these sort of renovations," said Mr. Moase. But club members and the communi- ty have rallied around the effort, he said. "We've had great support from every- one. Local businesses have been help- ing out by giving us stuff for free or with great deals," said Mr. Moase. In particular, Lake Scugog Lumber and Utica Farm Equipment have gone out of their way to lend a hand, said Mr Moase. : "Without them, this wouldn't have gotten done." Replacing the refrigeration system, however, has come at a high cost. "We're looking at about $105,000," said Mr. Moase. "We've got about $60,000 in capital funds from the mens' and two ladies' leagues, but that leaves us about $45,000 short. "We're going to have to gather that through fundraisers, members' dona- tions and loans, and we're going to try and approach the service clubs in the community and businesses," he said. "We're probably going to have a large debt at the end of this, but with every- one's help we should be okay." Books are now available for overnight use.
