During the past week, a number of regional resi- dents have reported receiving letters and e-mails ask- ing for their assistance in transferring large amounts of money located in either Nigeria or South Africa into Canada. The recipient of the letter is promised millions of dollars in return for their help, say police. While most of the letters originated overseas, a few Durham residents have reportedly received letters from Toronto which were addressed to them at their place of employment. This information may have been obtained from business cards that the recipients have distributed. Police issue warning about letter scam In return for the use of the recipient's personal bank account, the writer promises to pay 40 per cent of $7.5 million (U.S.). In order to make this work, the recipient must pre- tend to be a long lost relative of a deceased man from South Africa, which of course is illegal, say police. The sender is probably more interested in obtain- ing an up-front fee or your private banking information, police say. It's a scam that appears in some form or another with some regularity. Durham Police are urging anyone who receives a letter similar to this to discard it and not to contact police unless you have lost funds to this scam artist. The Durham Regional Police Major Fraud Unit is investigating this scheme. 'is The 4 YY. C0) 0 I Lo - 15%OFF [3 :Te Bb ToT: fi [o) VX.
