PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 12, 2000 - 21 What a busy week many of our residents have had even with a very stormy Tuesday afternoon and evening - so bad that the weekly card party was cancelled. Many from this area enjoyed the memories of Don Messer's Jubilee Christmas program at either Lindsay or Orillia while others enjoyed the Irish Rovers evening at Lindsay on Friday evening. Members and friends of the Pine Ridge Garden Club held the Christmas pot luck supper and annual meeting on a stormy Tuesday evening in Nestleton Hall. Those that attended enjoyed a great evening of won- derful food, fellowship and fine meeting. On Monday evening, Dec. 18 the annual Cartwright High School Christmas Concert will be held at CCPS. Cost of admission is an item for the Operation Scugog Food Bank. The Senior's Dinner will be on Wednesday, Dec. 20 at 12:30 at the Rec. Centre. For reservations please call the high school as soon as It'll be held at the Cartwright Central Public School gymnasium possible. Last Wednesday evening many from here enjoyed the Farmer's Santa Parade through Enniskillen and area with the brightly decorated farm machin- ery using lights, singers, hockey players, etc. A most unique event, indeed. Kathleen Dorrell underwent successful hip surgery last week in Toronto and is showing daily improvement. Best wishes are extended to you from your many friends and relatives here for a speedy recovery. Patti Alpe of Mason St. is recu- perating after surgery on her foot and will be off work for a few more weeks. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Several of our travellers have returned home again. Andrea Weir enjoyed a holiday to Disney World along with Jim, Liz and Fraser Weir. While there, they were surprised to meet the for- mer Anne Kristensen, her hus- band and little boy now of the Ottawa area. Jean and Merrill Van Camp have returned home from a Florida holiday. Nancy Bryans has returned from three weeks relaxing vacation in Florida spending time with Byron and Juanita Clapper of Ohio in Holiday, Ed and Doreen Mitchell of Indiana in Clearwater, and lunch with Jean and Ron Hall of Newfoundland among other vis- its. Two weeks were spent with her sister Barb Hanc of Bowmanville at her mobile in Largo. A group of our young men have been enjoying touring Europe by a variety of means of travel. John Ford, Kirk Swain and Adam Wonnacott returned home on Friday after several months of travelling and seeing the sights of Europe. Kevin Gilbank had joined the group for a couple of weeks and Matt Bell had spent a month with them. What great sto- ries they will have to tell about such an adventure. Ross and Irene Vanclief of Corbyville spent a few days with Cecil and Marie Gibson enjoying the bus trip to Orillia to enjoy the Messer Christmas program. Plans are well underway for the Family New Year's Eve which will be held at the arena and fair- grounds on Dec. 31. There will be skating, horse and wagon rides, refreshments including hot chocolate and a cake and lots of activities concluding with fire- works at 10 p.m. Tickets which cost $15 per family of four or sin- gles at $5 each are available at Penny's in Blackstock, Katherine's in Nestleton, Sunnyside in Caesarea or the North St. Municipal Office in Port Perry. The annual Snowflake fun bonspiel geared for families and anyone wishing to wear off the Christmas food is set for Dec. 27 Annual CHS Christmas Concert's planned for Dec. 18 beginning at 8 a.m. or 9:30 a.m. depending on which draw you wish. St. John's Anglican Church By Colin Beal The children of the church school will present their annual Christmas Pageant during the Eucharistic Service on Sunday, Dec. 17. The children and teach- ers have been working very hard on this year's production. This week is White Gift Week at St. John's. Please bring your gifts of canned and other non- perishable foods or cheques for perishables. This year, Operation Scugog and Denise House will be the beneficiaries. Again this year St. John's will celebrate the Christmas season with the traditional service on Christmas Eve, Service of carols and lessons on Dec. 31 and the First Eucharist of 2001 on Jan. | at 10 am. The Epiphany, which ends the Christmas season will be celebrated on Jan. 7. There will also be several mid-week services. Ride your snowmobiles on the lake, not in our Pine Ridge Garden Club We had that usual closing out feast at our pot luck supper last Tuesday night. After dinner we had the election of officers with Shirley Love becoming the new president. All other positions were by acclamation other than the secretary's position. After the minutes and treasurer's report were passed we had entertain- ment by Emma Worr of Caesarea who first played her guitar and later the piano The evening ended with each of us wishing Just a reminder to all those who ride sleds one another the season's greet- ings with plans to be back the first Tuesday in March. Lake Scugog Historical Society and the Museum Board We had a great Victorian Christmas Carol Service last Sunday night with the church filled to full capacity There stood that great pipe organ from two centuries back It played the car- ols we all now sing plus a few of yester years. The Port Perry Senior Choir sang out with such exuber- ance that the walls shook Gretel Greenbank Area news by Doris Hill Youth choir practice is Wednesday We were greeted to the church service on Sunday by Doug and Joyce Larmer, Jessica, James and Jordon. John and Marg. Bruce per- formed the Lighting of the Advent Candle Ceremony. Mary Jean Till read the scripture les- son. Greenbank Youth Choir ages 10 years and up will practice Wednesday, Dec. 12 from 5 to 6 p.m. upstairs at the church. All singers welcome. Primary choir ages six to nine years will prac- tice downstairs on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 5 p.m. Senior Choir practice will be Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 7:45 p.m. Christmas Eve practice will begin at 8:30 p.m. Also on Thursday, Dec. 14 at 7:30 p.m. with the Christmas Eve practice at 8:30 p.m. There will be a 10 to 15 min. Christmas Carol sing beginning at I'l am. Sunday, Dec. 17. Come early and enjoy singing some favourite carols. The Fidelis Unit U.C.W. had an enjoyable Christmas meeting on Wednesday, with loads of deli- Crawford, Fred Tassey, Lester cious food and social hour. Tina Raines and Roberta Baird sang some beautiful Christmas songs. A good time was had by all at the Christmas euchre on Friday evening with prizes going to: Ladies - Ruby Dusty, Norrine Cook, Shirley Lee and Audrey Baylis. For the gents - Terry Baylis, John Cook and Glen Till. Lucky draws were won by marion Hempen, Glen Till, Audrey Baylis, Mary Jean Till, Marie Cookman and Jean Hunter, Delicious lunch was provided. Cameron was our soloist. It was indeed a great Christmas service with the audi- ence picking additional carols they wished to sing at the end of the service After the service we retired to the back room to enjoy all those goodies plus apple cider or coffee One great evening There will be a board meeting this Thursday, Dec 14 at the school house at the museum grounds at 730 p.m Blackstock Lions We enjoyed a very socially friendly afternoon last Sunday at the Goodwood Lions Hall when District Governor Homal Singh held his Season's Levy It was great to see and chat with mem- bers of zone A16 east To the pupils of Blackstock Public School, I'm proud to say we had your display on show of the peace posters. It was definite- ly the high point of interest of the afternoon. Thank you for your support. There will be a board meeting this Wednesday at Lion Bruce's home. I attended the inaugural coun- cil meeting of the new council for the next three years last Monday afternoon. The mayor and each councillor took the oath of office then gave a short address on parks their main subjects of interest for their term in office. After the meeting refreshments were served | drove by the Port Perry fire hall the other day and | saw Gay Construction has the footings in for the new addition Should the weather cooperate we will have our temporary new council cham- ber finished before long Skidoo-ers There is a Scugog bylaw that says you are not allowed to ride around on the property of our parks There is the lake you can tear around in all those fancy cir- cles To prevent accidents please take note there are a number of skating ice rinks near the shores along our shoreline of the lake Please stay a safe dis- tance out from the shoreline or you may get hit with a flying puck Joke of the Week A jet ran into some turbulent weather and to keep the atten- dants calm the flight attendant brought out the beverage cart.
