AND A FOOTBAL Pool FoR PORT PERRY! A ROOF! YEAH! "AND 1 WANT NEW SOCKS! AND A TIE! L! AND... OHYEAH, A NEW A BIG ONE 'WiTH With Christmas on Monday and Boxing Day on Tuesday next week, we won't publish The Star, but your Weekend Star will arrive as usual. So it's appropriate for us now to extend our warmest wishes for a happy holiday season, and a safe, healthy and prosperous new year. Funny the way the year flies by, isn't it? Seems only a short time ago we were all speculating, in these pages and everywhere around the globe, about the potential impacts of the Y2K computer bug, and other such millennial anxieties. When the new year, century and millennium arrived quietly - indeed, so benignly, with a warm, sunny day - we all relaxed a bit. But as is the case, we also looked ahead expectantly to what may transpire during the 12 months to come. Here in Scugog it was a relatively quiet year, really, the only political waves occurring in November, with the municipal election, an event that was followed by a federal vote. Again, not much changed. The waters may be choppier in 2001, if the municipal realignment bugaboo comes to be, but we'll take it, as we tend to, in stride. For now, the quiet and peace of the holiday season is beginning to descend. Thoughts focus far less on issues, it seems, as folks consider what they hold near and dear: The family and friends. Here's hoping that the good feelings and peace of the season linger long, and keep you all warm and secure through the cold months to come, and beyond. A very Merry Christmas to you all. 1 NV Il Hd KADDA Port PERRY STAR Remember When? i ------ i TI SL -- THRO : The first snowplow to be operated in Ontario County was owned by Harold Archer of Archer Motors, Port Perry. The snowplow is seen here sitting in front of the Scugog Island "Red & White" store in February 1939. Note the big 'V' shaped plow on the front of the truck, with dual-chained wheels on the rear. Port Perry Star Letter of the Week A bit of bad advice To the Editor: Re: Albert Putsey's column "Ride your snowmobiles on the lake, not in our parks" Tuesday Dec. 12: | felt I had to respond to Mr Putsey's extremely irresponsi- ble piece of advice Has he for- gotten so quickly the terrible tragedy that struck our region in the winter of 1998? Just to refresh your memory, at least two "sledders" died on that lake at Caesarea doing just as he advises in his column | know that one of my daugh- ter's classmates went into that lake last winter, and was very fortunate to come out of it noth- ing more than very cold. Others have not been so lucky. | agree that the snowmobilers should not be riding in our parks, as it is dangerous to them and the people who may be using them, as well as damaging to the parks themselves However, sending them out onto what has become a very deadly body of water is not good advice - itis giving them a death sentence. There are many good snow- mobile clubs in the area that maintain trails that cover all kinds of terrain, and offer safe fun sledding. | personally am not a sledder, but I'm sure that even a lay-per- son like myself has enough sense to recognize dangerous advice when | read it. I'm very disappointed that you should be so uncaring, Mr. Putsey. Karen Robertson Prince Albert VRE Saas MEE
