"These NuTrmon Pros™ Nutrition Resolutions! by Sheryl Harding Friedrich RD What were your resolutions for the New Year? To run a marathon? Or stop eating junk food? Sound familiar? Don't we all look forward to a new start at the beginning of the year? Chances to tackle those problems or dreams that were held over from the past year. Not to be discouraging, but perhaps smaller, more realistic goals may help to achieve larger goals. Particularly after Christmas feasting we often have resolutions about food and eating. Rather than plan to change your whole eating style, why not break the changes down into bite size pieces (pun intend- ed)? If eating healthy and exercising in 2001 are your goals, try start- ing with one food group from "Canada's Food Guide for Healthy Eating". For instance, decide to have at least 6 or 7 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Once that is a habit, try to work on 2 to 4 servings of milk products per day and so on. Remember it takes 21 days to form a habit. If you want to increase your activity as well, start out with a 10-minute walk daily. It is much easier to talk your- self into that than a 30-minute jog in January. Who knows? By the end of the year you might work up to a 30 minute walk everyday. Happy New Year!
