That's because of a tremendous outpouring of support for the local food bank, which was on the receiving end of donations large and small from businesses, school children, community organizations and individuals. The community showed a great deal of generosity for this most.worthy of causes, supporting the needy, especially at a special time like Christmas. Now here's the bad news: Despite a booming economy and sustained good times in Ontario and Canada, more than 160 families.in Scugog Township needed the support of the food bank to enjoy any kind of Christmas at all. And the situation was similar for food banks and other support agencies here and across the province. | And now it's January, that coldest and darkest point in the year, and the need will continue. Fortunately, donations collected during the Chyistmas season should sustain the food bank here until Easter, when their next big collection drive will be launched. It is difficult for most of us to imagine coming to the point at which we would have to appeal to an agency such as Operation Scugog in order that our children not go hungry. But it is a cold, harsh reality for many of the folks whgtiv&among us, and their numbers do not dwindle as the years go by, the boom goes on, and the tax cuts keep rolling in. : | "There's no simple solution for that problem it would seem. So "all we-can do as a community is to continue to keep them in mind, the needy, and show the kind of generosity and kindness in January and February and beyond that we showed this past Christmas. : 4 IT'S ICEFRISHIN SEASON! _ ° ° N\ A 0 ah 3 { y/ Ligh To the Editor: This is to say thank you to all of the people in Scugog Township who sponsored me on my expedi- tion to Antarctica with "Students on Ice". You have made a trip and an experience of a life time possi- ble for me. We left Toronto at noon on Wednesday December 27 and arrived in Buenos Aries, Argentina 18 hours later (8 a.m. their time, 6 a.m. our time). We stayed in Argentina overnight and are flying on the 29th for another 5 hours to Usuaia, Argentina (southern most tip of South America) where we will board our ship to Antarctica that evening. ; We hoped to arrive in Antarctica on New Years Eve (the coming together of 2 oceans between Trip an 'experience of a lifetime' South America and Antarctica can lead to some rough and unpre- dictable seas). If you want to follow our journey: every day up until our return on January 8th we are posting inter- views, pictures, and regular jour- nals every day at www.studentson- ice.sympatico.ca I am in the back row in the pic- | ture taken in front of our hotel in Buenos Aires yesterday morning. You can also leave messages for me by clicking on "discuss the 'adventure" and registering to post messages that will be faxed to us aboard the ship. Once again, thank you so much for your support and providing me with this amazing opportunity. Scott Duncan. Port Perry [E-mail: editorial@portperrystar.com | a a -- lr NE pal
