People here long ago real- ized that living in the country, near large urban centres, means that weekends will bring a flood of pleasure-seekers and day-trippers. Usually, we co-exist well. The visitors come, have their fun, and contribute to the local economy to varying degrees." For us, the end of the weekend arrives and brings a respite from the traffic. Scugog has no off-season, as winter draws ice fishermen from January until the end of February. And it seems that the reputation of the lake grows each winter. It's unfortunate that parking problems have arisen on Platten Blvd. On opening day of the season, Jan. 1, residents say there was a'huge amount of traffic, and vehicles lined both sides of the narrow street. This past weekend there were also numerous trucks and cars. This problem is, as issues in modern municipalities go, relatively minor. All the council has to do is regulate parking on the street, and then have its bylaw officer patrol the area during busy times, issuing tickets. The fishermen will not go away. Instead, they'll use other access points, such as the municipal parking lot and boat launch in Port Perry. And the township could even consider some sort of similar lot on the Island, if the land was available. Why not give the fishermen a safe, legal place to park, for $10 a day? Above all, the interests of the residents must and, we're sure, will be considered. They are the people who live here year 'round, paying taxes and contributing to the township. The situation can be settled quickly, and effectively, without any serious impact on the winter fishery. ) Oo far this ear there has only been one locally fevorien case of the flu! We live on Scugog Point; for years we have asked these ice hut fishermen to please not block our driveways, and have met with all the curse words that can be said. They take chunks of wood out to their huts, and do not bring them back when they leave. In the spring we have all this debris floating onto our shore. | You can see beer cases being taken out, but none coming back. The garbage just goes into the holes that they auger in the ice. Most of these people do not live in our area, so they don't care. All the residents | have talked to would like this so- called sport, stopped. | have to agree, then all of us can get our lives back to nor- mal. FrankHarris Nestleton ~ Got an opinion?
