Let us take a closer.look at the portion sizes to see if that is the case. Here are some tips to help you determine what one portion looks like. This is adapted from "Healthy Bites" by the National Institute of Nutrition. Grains Group: 5 to 12 servings 1/2 bagel = hockey puck 1/2 cup pasta or rice = small fist or light bulb 2 to 4 servings + +50g cheese = size of two thumbs, or two slices of processed cheese Milk Products: Vegetable and Fruits: 5 to 10 servings One medium sized piece = tennis ball 1 cup of salad = fist or cupped hand Meat and Alternatives: 2 to 3 servings 50 to 100g meat, poultry or fish = Deck of cards, computer mouse or palm of hand 2 tbsp. peanut butter = ping pong ball As you can see the portion sizes are not large and often what is one serving for us would actually count for 2 or 3 servings on the food guide.
