"Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 30, 2001 - 19 MoJacks could face Chiefs in first round of playoffs From Page 18 to quickly take advan- tage of an opponent's misfortune. That happened early in the second period when Mojack's starting netminder, lan Watson, was forced from the game with an injury. The score was 3-1 at that time and the Chiefs seemed to smell blood as they turned up the heat a couple of notches and began to press relentlessly in the Mojack's zone. Watson's replacement in the MoJack cage, Jeff Rankine, had not seen game action in over a month. However, he could not be blamed as the Chiefs' constant pressure seemed to throw the entire MoJack squad out of kilter. "We learned a big les- son, | hope," said the coach and GM. "We need to have 20 guys come to play every night." For the Chiefs, Dustin Hunt led his team on the score-sheet with six points on two goals and four assists, while Russ Farthing fired a hat trick and chipped in with a helper as well. As has been the case on more than one occa- sion this season, the middle period proved to be the downfall for the MoJacks as the Chiefs fired half a dozen pucks into the net, without a reply from the green and white. The lone tally for the MoJacks came late in the first period when Jason District level From Page 18 family, fraternal, service organization with over 1.6 million members in more than 11,000 local councils. In 2000, Knights donat- ed 50 million manhours of volunteer time and $105 million to charitable and benevolent causes, spon- @2>ID|> wm 2mim|O <|O|z|= >|<im SIO» |(<|O|= C{O|--- m{X|-- mio|>»|n F3 {mix >|0|> Eimix o =< re Whitworth got one behind Ryan Hogan with help from Shawn Curran and Nick Pelyk. All 12 goals in this game came with the teams at even strength -- something of a rarity in Junior C hockey these days. This game was played on Saturday night, rather than the usual Sunday for MoJack home dates to avoid a clash with some football game in Florida. Fortunately for the MoJacks, the loss to the Chiefs will not have a directly negative impact on their quest for fourth place and the final berth in the Central League playoffs. The Little Merchants also went down to defeat that night, a 5-3 loss to the second-place Uxbridge Bruins. And the Merchants failed to make any ground up the next afternoon as they were nipped 5-4 in a make-up game against the Georgina Ice. So, the Mojacks still hold their nine-point cushion over the Merchants with each club having five games left. SLAPSHOTS: The injury suffered by Watson in the loss to Lakefield is not of the serious variety (he seemed to take a shot high on the shoulder or collar bone) and club officials expect he will be able to practice tonight (Jan. 30). Whether he plays in a crucial game tomorrow (Jan. 31) night depends on how the injury Britain responds. In a game that will decide the playoff aspi- rations for both the MoJacks and Merchants, the teams will meet in Little Britain Wednesday evening (Jan. 31) at 8:30 p.m. It had originally been scheduled for Jan. 13 but was postponed for the All-Star game in Sutton. If the MoJacks win on Wednesday night, it will mathematically knock the Merchants from any post-season play as they will be 11 points back with just four to play. A Merchant victory would keep their hopes alive, but they would need to win all four remaining games while the MoJacks would have to lose their final four. As for the rest of the week, the MoJacks travel to Georgina on Friday (Feb. 2) night to take on the Ice, and are back on home ice this coming Sunday (Feb. 4) for a match with Uxbridge. That should be an entertaining affair, no matter what the playoff picture is as the Bruins and MoJacks have never been known to "take any prisoners" when they meet on the ice. Face off is set for 7 p.m. The regular schedule for the MoJacks ends Feb. 10. Should the team be successful in its quest for a playoff berth, their first-round opponents likely will be the Chiefs from Lakefield, while Uxbridge and Georgina will meet in the other series. next for local K of C winners soring programs to benefit their church, councils, com- munities, families and youth.
