Another factor leading to the venue move last year was dissatisfaction among merchants on Queen and Water Streets. The contended the street festival detracted from their sales. The 2001 edition of the event will be reduced in length, Mr. Northey told the township's economic development committee last week. Instead of run- ning from Thursday evening through to Sunday afternoon, the fes- tival will begin on a Friday night, and last all day Saturday. It has been scheduled for July 13 and 14. And there will be no midway this year, said Mr. Northey. "It hasn't really been decided yet what we're doing, but (the chamber) has had preliminary dis- cussions with the BIA about a partnership and working together on a new festival," he said. The Chamber is await- ing a decision from the BIA, said Mr. Northey. No matter what the BIA role is, there will no longer be a Festival Days event. "It's a dead issue. Apparently we've reached a time in our society where it's time for a change," said Mr. Northey. "What worked 10 years ago may not necessarily work today." He said Festival Days event was simply getting too big. "The consensus of the chamber was that it was a very big undertaking to put (at the fairgrounds). The amount of hours it required is astronomical," he said. "There were people who were volunteering hundreds of hours. It just wasn't feasible to put on a product that size with vol- unteers. | don't have any inclination to do it, and | . don't think there are any other chamber members Mackey & Bailey Barrister & Solicitor Saturday Mornings by appointment Lake Scugog Lumber Building Oshawa Rd., Port Perry Mon.-Fri. 436-7600 Sat. am. 985-7391 Stonemoor Day Care Centres Inc. 399 Queen Street, Port Perry Call Karen for more info 955-0800 Open ° « 6:30am - ? Festival Days was moved to the fairgrounds last summer after down- town merchants com- plained about sales being affected. Chamber officials also cite the refusal of township council to allow a midway in Palmer Park. The merchants have since changed their stance, says Mr. Northey. "I guess there was some rethinking done by the BIA. They've decided to take another look at Festival Days and perhaps it's occurred to them that it would be better for them if they were involved," he said. According to chamber figures, approximately 10,000 people attended last year's event. "Ten thousand peo- ple... that's a lot of people spending their money downtown. | guess they've rethought it and realized that it would probably be a benefit to them." However, there is no guarantee the Summer Celebration will staged just yet. "It's not 100 per cent certain it will happen," said Mr. Northey. "We won't know anything until we hear back from the BIA." If an agreement is not reached, the event will likely not occur. It'll be easier on the volunteers," said Ms Brock. "What we don't want to see is outside vendors and the midway, because it takes up valuable park- ing. It's something we're looking into."
