"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Street crime unit seizes PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 13, 2001 - § 570,000 worth of pot Members of the north -Durham Street Crime Unit made a seizure of 14.5 pounds of marijuana last week. The street crime unit, which operates out of 26 Division in Port Perry, conducted surveillance on a vehicle last Wednesday (Feb. 6) and stopped the driver after he was alleged to have driven in an erratic manner. The driver, a Brechin resident, was charged with driving offenses; police allege that evidence of drugs were found in the drivers area of the vehicle. The car was impounded and, after obtaining a search warrant, officers searched it. Police say they found and seized, 14.5 pounds of marijuana in large freezer size baggies. Police say the marijuana has a street value of $70,000. The Brechin man faces charges of dan- gerous driving, two counts of possessing a controlled substance and one count of possession for the purpose of trafficking in a controlled substance. This is the largest and most recent in a series of drug arrests by the unit of street crime officers targeting illegal drug traffick- ing in the north Durham area. Previous arrests have targeted alleged street level dealers and buyers. Police sources say the battle against drug traffic in the Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock areas is "far from over."
