et ev i Set 18 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 20, 2001 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Volunteers carry out many tasks for food bank By Heather McCrae Port Perry Star Whenever there is coverage of some- one making a donating to the Operation Scugog's food bank, we generally see Kathryn Gundry or Anne Wanninkhof's photo in the paper. Sure, these women deserve a lot of credit for their volunteer efforts, but Mrs. Wanninkhof says not all the praise should go to them. Credit should also be given to Fred and Doris McMahon, she said. "We get the profile, but we aren't the people working behind the scenes," she said. "If it wasn't for Fred and Doris and the work of other volunteers, it would be impossible to do our job." Opcration Scugog was formed to assist families in Scugog that are in need. For over 25 years now Mrs. Wanninkhof, for- merly a social worker and supervisor with Durham Region, has been involved as a volunteer co-ordinator with Operation Scugog. It all began with the distribution of Christmas hampers; when a further need was recognized, the food bank opened in 1988. At that time Kathryn Gundry also came on board: "I felt it was a need | could help with," she said. Located in the basement of the Kinsmen Hall, the Food Bank is open Wednesday afternoons from | to 4 p.m. "Without each other we could not coor- dinate the food bank," said Mrs. Gundry. "It's a team effort. We schedule volun- teers, keep paperwork up to date, and organize the spring and fall food drives. And there is always work to be done keeping the shelves filled and stock rotat- ed." But people like the McMahons are the backbone of the food bank's success, said Mrs. Gundry. For 20 years the McMahons have been involved with food banks. Fifteen years ago they began supporting a food bank in Toronto. Soon after their retirement five years ago they moved to Port Perry, and began to volunteer their time and ser- vices here. "After retiring from a successful busi- ness we didn't want to become stagnant, as we have always been an active cou- ple," said Mr. McMahon. "So when we read an article in The Port Perry Star about volunteers being needed for Operation Scugog, we phoned Anne. | told her we had a van and could do deliv- eries. By volunteering we feel we are giv- ing back a bit of our good fortune to oth- ers." Since that phone call, the couple has been busy. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday they pick up day-old bread and baked goods from the IGA, Reid's Independent and Mike's Food Basics, as well as any food donations the public has left in drop-off boxes. All this food is then delivered to the food bank, where it is either stored in the freezer or stacked on the shelves. Students at Port Perry High School also get involved in giving. Every Wednesday morning the McMahons pick up frozen packages of surplus soup the students of Jean Tansley and Debbi Nelligan have made, and deliver it to the food bank. "This is all time consuming, and it's a lot of work slugging everything," said Mrs. Wanninkhof. "Fred and Doris do so much for us that we only allow this wonderful couple to take one week's vacation," she laughed. Donations also come from Liz Schillings at the White Feather Country Store. "Liz always donates baked goods and eggs," said Mrs. Wanninkhof. "It's all our volunteers who deserve the credit for the success of the Food Bank," she said.
