ER "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" * PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 20, 2001 - 21 They're off to North Bay now Tween girls win berth in provincial tournament This past weekend in Oakwood a group of Tween ringette players turned a corner in their lives. Emotions swirled even more frantically than the snow as Whitby, Ajax, Pickering and a red tag 'rep' crew from Port Perry, Mariposa and Sunderland clashed for the honour of representing Central and Southern Ontario in the Provincial 'A' champi- onships in North Bay. Even though we have a relatively tiny population base to draw from, the comradery among the girls was enough to keep 12 girls loyal to their roots. Ken Huibers, Cathy Murray and Brian Whyte,' one from each region of Mariposa, Sunderland and Port Perry respectively, iced a team with old sweaters but new dreams. Representing Huibers Mariposa team was: Carley Wade, Becky Triggs, and Lindsay Huibers. From Sunderland we have Christina Quinn, Becky Murray, Kate Farrell and Brittany Harris. Port Perry supplied Amanda Curry, Amanda Doble, Kim Wilson, Lauren Guthrie and goalie Lyndsay Whyte. coach - Speedy's new sponsor at track Speedy Auto Service is the new title sponsor of Saturday Night Racing at Mosport Speedway. The qualifying tourna- ment consisted of a round robin format with the top two teams playing off for the right to go to North Bay. Mariposa followed a 7-5 win over Ajax with a heart- breaking last second loss to Whitby. Needing two wins to advance, the strong Pickering team met a solid defence in a 3-1 win and Mariposa was one victory away. Whitby returned for* the finale but were trounced 7-1 and the girls were Provincial bound. Our girls quickly learned that hard work and heart, overcome almost anything in the sports arena. The girls now had a measuring tool to gauge their progress over the years. * -- pe hid Week end As a parent and coach, watching these girls sweat, ache, cry and laugh in their beloved: sport of ringette made all these years of involvement with these great kids and my friend- ship with their parents all the more fulfilling. It is very gratifying to see girls you have coached for so many years reach the next level. Something must have sunk in. These girls played together as a team to get to this championship and _ the memories of the good times and friendship that will ensue in North Bay will last a lifetime. .
