Jay Todd, Scugog Township's parks and recreation director, told The Star last week that he will take comments from a public meeting on the issue, and consider them while determining where the park would best be located. A public meeting has been sched- uled for this Thursday night (Feb. 22) at the Latcham Centre in Port Perry, begin- ning at 7 p.m. "We've had meetings with the BIA, (Scugog) Chamber of Commerce and the skateboard group committee," said Mr. Todd. "Now, we want to get the public's opinion on the matter: What do they want to see us do?" Officials have selected two locations as prime spots to build a skateboard park: On the old arena ice pad by the CIBC parking lot, and by the Scugog Community Centre on Reach St. "We'll try and go over the pros and cons of both locations; we certainly want to know what their feelings are on the matter," said Mr. Todd. Construction could begin by April or May. At a meeting last month, local mer- chants voiced opposition to building the Pictures in Stone," f ~ work of artist, William park downtown. The other option is to construct it at the Scugog Arena on Reach St. If that location is selected, Mr. Todd says that he'd like to see the park locat- ed at the front of the complex. "I'd like to see it incorporated into the front. It would make it visible and I think we can address the needs of the kids out there," he said. A draft plan of the skateboard park calls for it to measure about 17 metres by 28 metres. It could cost anywhere between $70,000 and $80,000, said Mr. Todd. A volunteer committee has already raised $30,000, including money from the Main St. Ontario grant program. Mr. Todd has set aside about $15,000 in his 2001 parks budget for the park, leaving the remaining funds to be raised by the skateboard park group. In a letter to the township received at yesterday's council meet- ing, Dr. Darryl Workman says the pro- posed location of the park, on the old arena ice pad between Water and North Streets " will be detrimental to me both personally and profession- ally." Dr. Workman's office is located at 189 North St. "I am tired of the planners and supporters of this park saying it will be located out of the way behind the downtown businesses when it will be point blank in front of my building with the proposed pathway leading down the hill right onto my front patio," he wrote. He writes that a majority of the merchants in Port Perry's downtown core also oppose the park. "The emphasis from a business standpoint is this is not a good loca- tion," wrote Dr. Workman. "I certainly don't expect these kids to make appointments for eye exams on their own or to. buy eyewear only their parents will buy. As well, my property value will go down in the proximity of such a park." Dr. Workman also cited excessive noise, visibility and safety concerns for the users as reasons why the park should be built at the Scugog Community Centre on Reach St. "If the park goes across from my office and home, I will have to con- sider relocating," said Dr. Workman in his letter.
