Students launch fundraiser for - By Chris Hall Port Perry Star A group of Port Perry OAC students will be doing all they can to help raise funds for the Scugog Shores Historical Museum in the coming weeks. As part of the curricu- lum for their OAC Business Administration . class at Port Perry High School, the students will begin canvassing mer- chants across Scugog Township this week in their' effort to aid the local museum. They'll be asking area businesses to sponsor the museum, sort of like an adoption program. Funds raised will go towards the general Island museum upkeep of the museum, and its various initiatives. The students also hope to ensure the histo- ry of Scugog is main- tained for future genera- tions, and want to see a partnership formed between the museum and local merchants. The group of students will do the canvassing themselves; they've set a target of $7,000. The sponsorship pro- gram will be broken down into four levels: Corporate Sponsors ($1,000), Patrons ($250- $500), Benefactors ($100- $249), and Friends ($25- 99). Businesses making donations to the museum will be thanked publicly. Township will grant tax exemption to Legion Scugog councillors have voted in favour of writing off the Port Perry Legion's tax bill, as long as the province promis- es to do the same with its portion of the annual bill. As part of legislation passed by the provin- cial government, veter- ans' associations may apply to their local municipalities to have their tax bills cancelled. Regional councillors here in Durham Region have also agreed to write off the Legion's tax bill. However, Scugog councillors wanted to ensure that the province writes off its share of the bill as well. The education portion of the tax bill is an esti- mated 22 per cent." The Port Perry Legion is asking that - taxes for the Legion hall and property, as well as the land for the housing development proposal, be dismissed. This tax rebate is only available for 10 years; there are eight years left to apply for the rebate.
